[WIP] Don't Call Me Gambler

Hello everyone,

I'm really glad to start a thread dedicated to a small project I'm working on. I named it "Don't Call Me Gambler" and it is a card game, inspired by Gwent from The Witcher 3 and a bit by Caravan from Fallout: New Vegas. This is a work in progress, I basically create it during my spare time. Don't want to show the gameplay just yet until it is not fully finished, but here is the picture to give you an idea of what it looks like.

What is the actual status of this?

Currently I do have general mechanics scripted (Player's turn, cards movement, cards placement, deck formation) and several cards implemented.

What is to?

  • Opponent AI
  • Advanced cards interaction
  • The rest of game logic
  • More cards, both: standart and special ones (up to 128 in total)
  • More visual and sound FXs
  • Several strategies for opponents
  • Voiced reactions (commentaries) from player and opponent
  • A little tutorial quest
  • Hopefully a fully voiced quest with emphasis on gambling (a competition?!)
  • Modular system. A master file with instructions on how to add this game possible in your companion/house mod.

What do you guys think? I haven't decided with the game's name yet TBH.

Thank you for your time and stay tuned for updates!

First impression: Very interesting!

Recommendation: I would design the system like a framework like, modular, so that it is easier to implement other card games, checkers, monopoly, battleship, etc.... for future implementation. It does not even HAVE to be you doing all the work. If you lay foundation, creative people will have something to work with, and you will be surprised what amazing things they can create. Not saying I know much about the actual modding you are working on, but I studied software design, and I know there are lazy ways where people hardcode everything, may get things done faster, but will leave very little room for scalability. Professional and ethical software designers strive not to be that guy!

Additional comments:

- Nobody in the right mind would come to Fallout 4 for an extremely challenging card game. So having good AI is good, but if I want to play a real card game, there are apps for that (I think they do exist). So your focus should be on the novelty side that provide some side content, something interesting to do, with just enough complexity.
- I would love to see how you implement this in game. Will this be a furniture item built via Workshop? Will it also be put around like in Diamond City and Good Neighbor? Maybe you can win some caps? Make it semi serious so that serious gamblers can get something out of it? You win if some players spent all day trying to win a hand in Good Neighbor.

- Notice those videogame holotapes like King kong, Grognak, and Space Invader in your Pipboy? They would have been way better if it has more interaction outside of the Pipboy itself. Pipboy in fallout = Pause menu. We don't need to spend more time in Pause menu. If you are going to implement this card game by locking the player into a screen, at least allow player to exit the screen, go to something, and come back to the same card game. This way we do not feel like we HAVE to commit to your "stupid little game" once we start it. Human psychology is important to consider. Players want to feel free, to have options, and do not like to feel locked in.

I personally do not play cards other than Solitaire. But I am so very interested in having board games in FO4. If you lay foundation, I would be interested to create something like Battleship and Horse race (with dice roll). These are rather simple. Speaking of which, one of the interview process for software engineer in Silicon Valley is to be able to create a crude battleship game, from scratch with C++ or Java, in like 1 hour. These are for mid level programmers hired by startup like Uber, Square, etc...

When I first played NV, I didn't really care for the card game feature. It grew on me after a while and I started to like it. I still don't really play the holotapes, but I do think this is a missing aspect from F4. I did love the card games in RDR and San Andreas (namely poker and blackjack lol).

I didn't seriously play Fallout 3 and NV. I got into Skyrim via Dragon Age (while searching for alternative when I was done with Dragon Age). And I just could not resist Fallout 4 when it came out, knowing it would carry the same modability like Skyrim, but with guns and bullets. I bought and tried out FO3 and NV but honestly did not get far. So I have no idea what those card game features were like.

But I can tell you what the Holotape games are like ... once you played, you cannot stop. There wasn't a save button (or I didnt see one). And you can't play a game while waiting for paint to dry either because once you are in Pipboy, the world pauses. At least they should make it like Everquest minigame (yep, there was one, Tetris I think). Dev team literately gave players Tetris to play while waiting. MMORPG is all about waiting. But anyway, FO4 mini game is just lame.

The good news is, the Pipboy app on phone (and tablet) also have 2 mini games and you can play those while you are in game doing something else.

forgive a verbose response, though this is an awesome idea;

sweet! this is awesome news and an entirely separate distinct game all its own that will be making it into

my personal Fallout continuity hehe. it'll be great to print out and take to FORPG sessions!

As a gwent, caravan, pazaak, Myth&Legends (chilean 7th edition)

competitive-Uno, omaha-holdem, hanafuda and pontoon fan from way back,

that'd be awesome to see.

Most wastelanders leave "Books" (school of the air/ school of the wasteland) by the Fourth Year,

so, many cardgames have pictograms instead of letters or numbers.

they're a palimpsest - the card is often made from fragments of other documents.

This would give great side-quests and ambient quests,

if the NPC overhaul completes and is nodally live-enabled...

you could have "card barons/esses" that chase down owed caps etc...

you can play with munitions, caps or trade-items, and it's forbidden in Enclave and BoS occupied territory.

"Maverick" style.

That'd make for immersive FORPG.

Villified by some companions and locales, but giving you more prestige or status in Goodneighbor etc.

Some city-state settlements have a strict policy for Caps for entry.

if you cannot afford a room at an inn or have a friend in the settlement, and have nothing to trade etc,

then, you must stay outside the city limits after sundown.

People could play this card game to win entry for a day, or might be banished to the outside of city limits

due to losing at the cards etc.

Rusty, a damaged protectron cut content from Diamond City,

was fond of playing cardgames,

that was, until his arm servos became not quite what they used to be.

He instead has proxies help him, usually another baron, "Sheng Kowalski".

It's rumored Kowalski "acquired" the water treatment plant after defeating the previous owner in a series of card games.

Kowalski sought permission from the Mayor of Diamond City, and that is how

the remains came to be found in the filtration pond by the Sole Survivor...

In a certain continuity, if Sole Survivor doesn't dissuade Sheng from evil;

Kowalski never learned his limits, or the law of the wasteland.

in trying to play cards with Mr Robert House, Kowalski pulled a feint and sleight of hand.

Kowalski tried to swindle House of the General Atomics Galleria...

The House. always. wins.

-----

A Mr Handy cardshark as the announcer would be AWESOME.

" A man boxing a kangaroo is a peculiar spectacle...but a kangaroo fighting a robot? Well now, I'm afraid you've lost me.

bloop

"Citizen Snips!"

a voice somewhere between the above, and nathan lane would be fun.

The Starlight City Invitational would be a great night-time tournament. They play movies in the background, free popcorn, it's a real treat.

The Greygarden Sweepstakes, on the top floor of the overpass hotel,

overlooking the Beantown (and interiors), wow, what an occasion.

The Hangman's Alley Cup, held on the 9th floor of that famous 'boardwalk', that'd be sweet.

if you're lucky it's dinner and a show - the feral ghouls approach from the fortified fake West entrance gate...

it's not uncommon to have stop-of-play what for the ghoul limbs flying over the gate and all...

The Goodneighbor Grief is held in 2nd floor of the town hall.

The Red Rocket Spa and Resort Invitational is held overlooking the rooftop 'paddling pool'.

The Vault 81 spectacular is held outside the vault in the cavern or outer cottages.

the entirely optional bonus rounds are held at

Red Rocket Outpost: Natick,

and The Slog.

If you go to those, be sure to bring Rad-Away and or a lot of 'protection'.

Names for a FO4 card game.

"Boston Bridge" <--- swanky wastelanders call the same card game by this name... those Colonial Flophouse dunderheads, or Boston Monument anybody really...

"Bank"/"ATM" <---- "I'll just go to the Bank, and make a withdrawal" etc, a common euphemism little changed in, by 2290, over 800 years...

"Wastelanders Shuffle/ Charleston Draw" <---- be careful, if you win too much, they'll blast you hehe.

Waste-Away

and I look forward to hearing more about this.

Like KingTobbe already said, TheWhiteCollarPlayers and myself are working on a gambling mod too. Our first game will feature Black jack. Since our projects are nearly the same we may be able to learn and contribute to each other if thats something your interested in. Im not saying to necessarily combine projects but I would be glad to have you within our circle for development discussions. The projects source is licensed under MIT and available online here https://github.com/Scrivener07/FO4_Games if you would like to study the direction we have taken so far.

We started our project 3 weeks ago from today, this is our current progress.
