Random CTD Frequently

The game CTDs at completely random times, either when something happens (Most recently, getting hit by a deathclaw, other times being looting a body right after I press E, or just punching someone when it connects) and sometimes when I'm just walking around. There's no error message or anything. When it happens when I'm just exploring, it's usually preceded by the game freezing for a second only once, and then a few seconds later it'll crash.

I know it's probably suuuper obvious but I'm totally blind to it lol

EDIT: I disabled all my mods, made a new save, COC'd to Concord, and the game CTD'd after walking around for half a minute while being attacked.

A lot of things can mess up with your game scotty9119 .... got questions for you :

- Are you playing in Windows 10 or lower ?

- Do you have anti-virus on ( other than Windows defender ) ?

- Do you have any other program running in the background while playing this game ?

- Have you updated you video card / mobo / windows update ?

- Have you cleaned your game master files ?

- Have you sorted your load order via LOOT ?

- Have you changed the load order after you used LOOT ? Changing load order is not recommended and may cause CTD's ....

- Have your tried to validate game files in Steam ( right click on FO4 game, go to properties, go to Local Files and validate game files ) ...

- Have you try to re-install the whole game again ( from scratch ) and play it without mods ? if all the previous questions are positive, meaning that you do not have anything in the background or anti-virus and assuming that you have all your computer components updated, then this ( re-installing the whole game again ) is your best choice.

- How many mods do you have ?

- What kind of rig do you have ?

 

Ramdom CTD's are most likely related to things outside the game ( your computer or programs running in the background ) or bad load order / conflicting mods to each other / etc, etc, etc.....

 

Again, if you are not sure, I would go nuke ... deactivate and delete all mods, delete game and reinstall the whole thing again. Use Google and search for the proper way to do this and if so, start the game without mods and play it till you get to the city and see if still is not working. If everything is good, then hard save and install mods 5 x 5 and see which one is causing the problem. It is tedious and time consuming but there is no other way unless you know how to patch your game using xEdit and that is something that takes a lot of time to learn and very delicate to handle.

hi im on windows 10 all gpu drivers are up to date done mod load order with loot im on a fresh install its only about a week ago i reinstalled it my rig specs are gtx 780 3gb core i7 6700k 8gb ram and no other programs other than file explorer chrome. i've narrowed it down to mainly progressing through quests where the crashes happen.

sopmac45 i decided to download mod organizer and there were flags came up so i found that the dlc was not enabled and since i enabled them all the flags have gone now and i got past the ctd part i had earlier could this of been the problem? im very confused as to why the dlc got disabled in the first place.

It could happen. Before I start playing, I always check my plugins and one day by mistake I unchecked one of them with my cursor when scrolling down ... but I am glad to hear that you found the problem and resolved it.

 

For example, last night I had a CTD in a place that I am not supposed to have it. I did quit the game to find out that Steam was updating my game. Tried to launch it and the FO4se did not launch my game so I had to download the last version and problem resolved. Sometimes things like this can happen.

 

One of the things that I recommend you to do is that once you have your load order in place ( via LOOT and whatever the mod author recommendation are in relation to load order and compatibility ), do not alter the load order and if you add a mod, let it be at the end of your load order. On this, you need to be careful. For example I have Scrap Everything mod and must be at the very end of my load order and it is; if I download another mod ( mid game ), by rule, I must leave it at the end but if I do that, then Scrap Everything will not be at the end any longer and could trigger a CTD. The only way around it is to make a patch via xEdit and that is something not that simple to do. NOTE : that is why it has been recommended by a lot of experienced players that if you are new to play this game with mods, to start with 5 mods first, try them out and see if you like them and if they are not causing any CTD and go from there. The idea behind this approach is that discover which mods are you going to keep for your final play through. In the middle of this process ( that will take some time ), you would have to save your game, download 5 mods, try them out and if you do not like some of them or they are causing CTD's, deactivate and delete them permanently and go back to your saved game and continue with the process. Once you find out which mods you really like for your play through, stick to them and do not alter the load order till you finish the game. Discipline and patience are very important to avoid frustrations.

 

I recommend you to watch the video located in the mod WOTC ( War of the Commonwealth - middle of the description section ) and once you watch it, you will not what I mean and by the way, it will teach you a lot of stuff about how to mod a game and how to patch a game. However, the instructions are lacking some details that we need but at least it will give you a better idea about modding a game.

 

I've also found out that my master files needed to be cleaned once I add a mod ( mid game ). So it is important just to launch LOOT ( do not sort your load order ) just to see if your master files are cleaned, otherwise proceed to do it. By not doing that, your game probably will crash or some quest will not run properly.

 

There are a lot of things beside quantity of mods and load order that must be taken in consideration that can also trigger a CTD and not necessarily can be related just to your mods or load order. Try to get the whole picture and make sure everything is as it is supposed to be. Warning : if for any reason you download WOTC, it has been warned by the author that we will have some CTD's .... I have this mod and I could not play my game without it and if I have a CTD once in a while, it does not bother me because it is part of this mod. The author of this mod is working in a much better version that will be available by the end of the year and according to what I know, it will be written in a way that CTD's will not longer be an issue. I can't wait for that.

i relive i've found the problem i was disabling mods one a time loading game and it crashing then i disabled https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/10795/?tab=14&navtag=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusmods.com%2Ffallout4%2Fajax%2Fmodbugs%2F%3Fid%3D10795&pUp=1 trouble maker outfit loaded talked to the same npc's where it was crashing to desktop and it did not do it then i renabled the mod and it did it again so disabled it again and now fine. i lost 6 days worth of gameplay as i thought it was an issue with the game but it turns out it was this.

I have been having ctds on fast travel recently and have been searching for the cause and maybe you gave me a clue; I have scrap everything and it is at the top of load order and I will move it to the end except....I have some dlc patches for it also, so should I just move the "Core" scrap everything or all related to it?

And even if I can't move it to the bottom on this save, as long as I know the key then ill just start a new game with the correct load order...maybe? *I'm so confused. bangs on head

edit; just tried to move it, no go..would an uninstall of scrap everything and reinstall place it at the bottom? and failing this, maybe a new game, installing my mod list but saving scrap everything for the last?

Start a new game, try again. You probably corrupted your save with uninstalling a mod.
