Using alternate start, I would like to RP a character arriving in Skyrim for the first time, and going to live with his sister and her child. Now I have a custom player home and relationship dialogue overhaul to help facilitate the illusion, but I'm lacking the right NPCs with the right settings for the job. I do have a basic understanding of TES5Edit to change names and/or voice types to enhance this experience further. Knowing which voices to use, however, is a bit beyond my understanding. Will anyone recommend anything to help establish this foundation?

Have you thought of Caroltta Valentia and he daughter Mila from Whiterun? Those are the first two I thought of.

I have! It occurred to me to use them as the family, but I don't know enough about modding to safeguard their AI and whatnot. I don't want to mess things up by transplanting them elsewhere! I feel it might be better to download some followers, or NPCs, and tweak them from there to accommodate my intention. I would need some guidance with the particulars, though, as I'm very wet behind the ears when it comes to editing them in TES5Edit. I've only done basic things such as changing display names, weight/height and voice types. I appreciate you taking the time to offer a suggestion, though!

This is tricky because I'm assuming you already want your spouse to be married to you? I'm not sure you could safely pull that off on a new game because Marriage is a mulit-stage quest that you have to complete. I'm not saying it's not possible, but I'm not great at scripting either. You could maybe try creating a .bat file that completes the quest stages in order that you could run after you start the game? Same thing with adopting a kid. (Edit-I totally mis-read your post, you want a sister, not a wife.) I'm not at home right now, so I can't look at the CK to tell you more.

 

I have successfully married Carlotta and adopted Mila before, but I did it the normal way. You just have to add Carlotta to the potentialmarriagefaction, and set her player relationship rank to "4" (Lover) and Mila to the BYOHRelationshipAdoptableFaction rank 0. Then marry and adopt them respectively. The only catch to that is you can't move into their house afterwards, I think you maybe have to add yourself to their house faction or something, Idk. I was using a custom house mod, so I didn't really care. I believe there is a mod that already does this, if you want to save yourself the work. One thing about Carlotta from a RP perspective is that she is a widow - her husband is dead, not missing- so you would have to account for that in your headcanon.

 

Otherwise, you could use one of the innumerable follower mods out there (or create your own) and try it that way.

Your idea got me thinking, so I tried creating a family without doing any scripting. I used a modded house as a base, and added a woman and child NPC's to it. I added them to the PlayerFaction and set Relationships for them and the player, and placed them in the house. It kinda worked, Neither of them had anything to say besides "Yes?".

 

So, I tried. I think part of the problem is, there really isn't any existing dialogue in the game for an NPC to be a relative of the Player (besides a spouse/child). If you really want a challenge, you could try clipping existing dialogue and creating new conversations, but that is beyond me.
