Do people know what the Thalmor want?

Are people aware of the Thalmor's ultimate goal of "unmaking" the world or is it kept top secret?

It's a secret. Should that sort of information get out the Thalmor would find it a lot harder to maintain their current....."allies".

How is it a secret? Practically every Thalmor I run into states their intents quite clearly. I mean everyone knows that the banning of Talos worship is just an convenient excuse -for them and the Empire to turn a blind eye-to grant them diplomatic immunity while "cleansing" the populace in Skyrim and elsewhere. One former Thalmor from the Interesting Npcs mod talks about her wanting to put young ones to death! No. Their intent was made quite clear in the Great War. At least the Redguards never stopped fighting them I think.

This is why the civil war never made any sense to me for either side. On the one hand, the Nords should have recognized that any independence they won was not going to last long- not with the Thalmor running amok. On the other the Empire should have just granted Skyrim independence- knowing that they would still be staunch allies in another war with the Aldmeri Dominion. The Empire was doomed whether they signed that unfair treaty or not- would have been better for them to go down while still holding to their beliefs.

YOU figure it out quick because of all the info and events your character is exposed to. But for much of the common folk, simply living life precludes much of the time and activities necessary for them to start understanding what the Thalmor are truly trying achieve. To the average Nord, the only thing they absolutely know is that the Thalmor are forbidding them to worship as they please and therefore threatening their freedom. They're not really able to see the "big picture" that you can.

As you read, you start to understand WHY so many of the Altmer (especially the Thalmor) are so pissed off about being mortal. There's also a part of the main story line and several quests that gives you more info as you complete them.

Hmm. If you say so. But I have read ALL of those books at least a couple of times and I don't seem to recall anything explaining that. And do you honestly think with their friends and family maybe being dragged off on some flimsy excuse by the Thalmor, that any Nord will not understand exactly what is going on! The StormCloaks relish the chance to kill Thalmor every chance they get! The people lived under the oppression of them because they and the Empire were effectively beaten in the Great War. They were afraid to fight back against the Thalmor directly and felt betrayed by the Empire for denying the divinity of Talos in exchange for basically just a cease-fire. Did you happen to read those books? Or talk to any Nord? The Nords full well understand that the Thalmor are their MORTAL ENEMY!!! I'm sure the peoples of elsewhere are under no illusions either.

Now as to what the Thalmor actually want, or why they want to destroy man or mundus. That is a matter of debate that has been discussed by many over the years. Something to do with their wanting to be immortal again from what I have read.

Being Immortal, fine for an elf, but destroying everything? There is no point, what would be left to do? Even villains should know better, that reeks of insanity. Even Daedric princes would try to put a stop to that. Its insane even by Molog Bal's standards.

You're quite correct, from our (mortal) perpective. However, the Thalmor really believe they can all return to their original transcendent state as spirits out-of-time if they "cancel" time (thereby unmaking Nirn.) To them, this isn't an insane thing to do because (in their view) they aren't murdering anyone, they're just preventing mortal existence from ever coming to pass. Of course, that's all metaphysical bull**** from our point of view. They're wrong about what they think they'll get by achieving their goals. I can't go into THOSE details without getting too much into spoiler territory. Again, threads in the spoiler section can help you understand if you still want to pursue Thalmor objectives and what will probably actually happen to them.

 

The Thalmor should really look to the example of the Dwemer for the fate of those who tamper with Things Men (and Mer) Were Not Meant To Know.
