Level of Detail Render Issues

Hello all,

I recently downloaded Ojo Bueno texture pack and It layered over NMC's pack nicely(in my opinion). The problem started when I tried playing the game on my laptop on battery pack. While figuring out that all I needed was to plug the thing in, I got a prompt to update my video card. After that update Fallout NV won't render LOD correctly. The terrain textures only show up about 5 feet from my character.

What I have tried.

- Reinstall of Wasteland Flora Overhaul

- Reinstall of NMC's texture pack

- Reinstall of Ojo Bueno

- Checking video card settings didn't help either

- Loading an old save but the problem existed there as well so I doubt it's save related.

- Archive invalidation is already enabled in NMM

What I haven't tried yet.

- I have not tried messing with the ini files yet.

- Reinstall of the game.

Here's my load order of just under 100 mods. I use LOOT to sort it but I'm open to any load order suggestions especially regarding this bug.

My guess is your hardware is not up to the requirements. That "prompt to update my video card" is highly suggestive.

"Texture packs" don't usually show up in the "load order". (They are replacing vanilla assets; thus they overwrite existing files.) And the issue with them is what size/resolution of the images you are using. Larger/"hi-rez" textures require more pixels, and larger screen display monitors (more "pixels per inch") multiply that requirement in a non-linear way. While your hardware may technically be able to handle it, the game is 7 years old, designed for Windows Vista with maximum screen displays of 1920x1080, with default image sizes of 512x512 pixels. The game engine texture cache tends to be the bottleneck.

The reverse can also be true: if you are using large images, the demands upon the hardware also increase. Laptops in general (unless they are specifically designed for graphics demands) tend to use "on-board", built-in video adapter "chipsets" which are often less capable than "addon boards" available with "desktop" or "workstation" systems. Games tend to be some of the most demanding video applications. (More "demand" tends to equate to "more power" and "faster battery drain".)

I would start by installing the lowest available "resolution" or "image size" version of both Ojo Bueno and NMC's packs, and work up. Otherwise, post your hardware specs (not just the video card brand/model and VRAM size), as well as the image size of the texture packs you are using and the display resolution your are playing at.

I could definitely try that. The funny thing is, the game was running great with those textures two days ago.

My specs.

OS: Windows 10

Intel R COre TM i7-7500u CPU

@ 2.70 GHz 2.90Ghz

8 GB Ram

Radeon R7 M445 Video card

Sorry if I missed something, I'm still learning all of the wonderful tech things. I really do appreciate the help and suggestions.

I'll try to include some screenshots from photobucket as well.

Did you rerun FNVLODGen after you added those two LOD texture replacers? See "Check list items #15 & 16" in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide.

If it was working fine two days ago, you really want to determine what changed since then. My first suspicion would be that you got hit with the Win10 "Fall creator's Update" patch that is currently being pushed out. There is always a possibility of any update causing problems with older games, as the vendors tend to stop testing against them as they drop out of favor. Your best bet in that case is to keep an eye out for any reports of issues on Reddit or other gaming threads.

Please see the 'Checklist' section in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide for suggestions as to things that might have changed.

The Radeon R7 M445 is an entry-level graphics card for laptops. On average the gaming performance should be similar to a Nvidia GeForce 940M (or 940MX with DDR3), according to the AMD specs description. It has a maximum of 4GB VRAM, but if you have less you will run into stuttering more quickly with higher-res images. That should be enough for mid-size images (up to 1024x1024), though you may want to give "ENBoost" a try if you do get stuttering. (You said you hadn't, so that is just for if it does appear.) "ENBoost" is discussed under the 'Solutions to Post-Processor (ENB/SweetFX et. al.) problems' section of the "Troubleshooting" guide.

Thank you so much for the suggestions DubiousIntent! I've seen you helping out a lot of people on here and just want to say that you are a great person for that!

I will look into to all of those. I'm not very tech savy but I'm always open to trying things for fixes. I managed to get all of those mods stable and working(I actually played with NMC's Highquality pack for the past 6 months with no issues until this Radeon update) so I'm sure I'll be able to figure out how to follow your instructions. I'll report back after I give some things a try. The good news is that although the terrain looks bad, the rest of the game is for the most part alright(one texture conflict with .357 revolver that should have been fixed with the WMX compatablity patch for Millenia's textures but I'll worry about that problem latter).

I have installed the FNVLodgen mod with the resources and will be figuring out how to rerun it.

Thanks again.

  • 3 weeks later...

Okay, Dubious I'm sorry for not posting sooner.

I finally was able to download the Fall Creators Update for windows 10 and a few Dell updates. After the updates, my game now renders the textures! It doesn't look like the graphics of a super high end machine but they do look really good! So the issue is resolved! I suspect it was my graphics card but I can't imagine why it was being held back by those updates. Anyways thank you!

There was a long standing (since Win7) problem with the system "d3d9.dll" that was finally fixed in the Win10 Fall Creator's Update. The reported amount of available VRAM was misreported in some instances due to a truncation error. So, the problem was related to, but not actually due to your video card. Good to hear the fix is working as intended.
