Why do extra Verts appear on Mesh when i Move the verts Of the UV Map in a 3D Application. IS IT FIX PLEASE HELP

Hello all I have been trying for weeks now to create a new looking beard by using an vanilla one all I have done is moved certain parts of the UV map around I use blender for this . but the problem is the vanilla beard thai I am using has by default 167 verts but after I skin the beard in 3ds max and export it as a Nif the verts shoot up to 237 I am guessing that with me altering the UV a bit the verts double or something. does anyone know of a fix for this happing please I really require assistance.
