Esbern Has Two Beards! BUG

Pretty wacky bug I encountered. I think I might have seen it in the PS3 version before some time ago also. Esbern has a Double beard bug to the side of his head just above his left shoulder. I've cleaned my esp's with TESVEdit and running the Unofficial Skyrim Legendary Edition Patch. Cant figure it out. I thought maybe it was a mod but I haven't installed any character mods (hair, extra followers,ETC). I was running Realistic ragdolls & force - medium but I disabled and its still ahppening. And was also using XP32 Maximum skeleton but it was not showing the spell cast animation while moving so I removed it right after I installed it; didnt even save with it. Im gonna try to post a screenshot but I'm not the best with posting pics on a forum post so it might just be a imgbb link, sorry.

Any help will be gladly appreciated since this is really destroying the game for me

Thanks guys!!!

Edit: Ok, so Grospolina kindly suggested that I delete my Skyrim.ini & SkyrimPrefs.ini located in \My Documents\My Games\Skyrim\ and reset my video settings with Skyrim launcher in another post I had about some buggy lighting effects. It seems to have killed this bug along with the lighting/ particle effect bug. Big thanks to Grospolina for the advice

Assuming it is a beard and you don't have some crazy outfit mod that has a beard attached to it, the problem would be in the face geometry mesh. Easiest solution would be to re-export it from the creation kit. Load any mod you have that alters his appearance (if there's multiple pick the one with the highest priority, if there's none just open Skyrim.esm), find the Esbern actor entry and hit ctrl + f4. If that doesn't fix it, we're either back to the crazy-outfit theory, or you have a problem with the skeleton (unlikely) or the beard mesh has a weight-painting issue.

It's the same solution for resolving the infamous grey-face bug if you want to look for a more in-depth tutorial, but it's really easy to do. You could also delete the loose, face-geometry file if you can find it. The game would revert to using the one packed in the BSA, which shouldn't be messed up. If either of these options gives you the infamous grey-face bug, then you didn't pick the mod with the highest priority that alters his appearance.

OK, I'm gonna be a good boy and post all the things I should have done as per the sticky in the technical information forum on asking for help; whoops :pinch: . Here are some screen shots about all relevant info on my system specs and game setup just to make things easier.

My skyrim directory is located in c:\

I'm also running a Nvidia GEforce 750M; Laptop, yes I know get a pc desktop. I'm trying

Edit: I checked steam for the Creation Kit and low and behold they dont even have it anymore. It all this Special Edition Creation Club horse s***. I bought my legendary edition from walmart almost 2 years ago so I guess I'm screwed on the Creation Kit fix.....

Thanks for your reply Levionte, I'm gonna try your suggestion.

Do you think I could use TESVEdit to sort out this bug with Esbern?

IDK but I have a hunch that the Netimmerse Override mod may be the culprit to this bug since it :

FEATURES

Shader Modifiers

  • Emissive Color
  • Emissive Multiple
  • Glossiness
  • Specular Strength
  • Lighting Effect 1
  • Lighting Effect 2
  • Texture Set
  • Tint Color (Auto converts shaderType, and can be used to recolor almost anything)
  • Alpha
  • Texture

Controller Modifiers

  • Start/Stop
  • Start Time
  • Stop Time
  • Frequency
  • Phase

Overlays

  • Add overlays to an Actor
  • Remove overlays from an Actor
  • Check overlays on an Actor

Is this thing overlaying something on Esbern or something? and now that I removed it is there some sort of residual bug in my save?

Thanks for your input and help!

I believe that NiOverride allows changing of texture overlays. Things like face tattoos, not beards. However, I could be wrong. If you want to test it, just rename Data\SKSE\Plugins\NiOverride.dll and run the game. You might lost tattoos and high heels, but you'll know if it's your problem. It shouldn't crash your game. I've disabled it before in order to try to fix a decapitation bug.

These should be Esbern's facegen files:

meshes\actors\character\FaceGenData\FaceGeom\Skyrim.esm\00013358.nif
textures\actors\character\FaceGenData\FaceTint\Skyrim.esm\00013358.dds

If those files exist, then you could try renaming them to see if they fix the problem. It will use the vanilla versions from the BSA instead. If it does fix it, then you'll have to track down which mod they came from. Do you have other mods that aren't listed in you Wrye Bash screenshot?

I Removed NiOverride and its associated files and still have the bug. The screenshot of Esbern in the canyon going to Sky Haven Temple is post removal of NiOverride. I also dont see the skyrim.esm file in \FaceGeom\ or \FaceTint\. I do see however Immersive patrols. I just downloaded NifSkope to try and view the files I should look at but I dont know how to open the skyrim.esm without TES5Edit. Is there a way to export the nif and dds within TES5Edit?

Edit: Ok, I figured out how to dig through the Skyrim - Meshes.bsa with NifSkope and I was going through the archive and skyrim.esm was in \facegendata\FaceGeom\. Im looking for Esbern now!

Edit: your advice from my post about the lighting bug in Skyhaven Temple seems to have killed 2 bugs with one stone!! I deleted my ini's in my documents where the savegames are and re configured my video settings at boom so more double heads on Esbern and no more screwy lighting/ particle effects etc. Thank you so much!!!!

Here's a snip of xEdit looking at Esberns file;

Ok, I looked at Esbern's nif within the Skyrim - Meshes.bsa. Here is a snip of what NifSkope loaded:

Snips of Esberns dds file with Skyrim DDS Viewer from nexus Mods (let me know if theres a better one)

How do you recommend I rename them?

Thanks for your help!
