I'm a big fan of open source software.  Mainly because I don't have a lot of money to spend.  I did some research into open source video editors and in the end, I chose blender.

I'm not much for words so here's a series of great tutorials:

I use Shotcut for video-editing (it costs $0, is regularly updated, has a pretty good range of features, and is well recommended) although I do also have Blender for working on meshes, so can't hurt to learn how to use it for video editing - thanks for sharing the tutorials.

Blender is one of the best open source software out there and you can do tons of stuff with that.
