You will need to add the following lines to the Fallout4Prefs.ini file below the section marked [Launcher]:

bEnableFileSelection=1

You will need to add the following line in Fallout4Custom.ini:

[Archive]
bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
sResourceDataDirsFinal=

The easiest and most foolproof way to install and activate mods is by using the Nexus Mod Manager. Easy and foolproof are important considerations for me and probably for most beginners.

If you do not have it you can download it from the top of the page. Might as well download the loot program as well. It can put your mods in the correct order from within NMM. LOOT - https://loot.github.io/

Next get the program Fallout 4 Edit - https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/2737/? Neither LOOT or FO4Edit are added by NMM so make sure you look at the read.me files for both programs for easy installation.

The next two programs are the Unofficial Patch - https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/4598/ added by NMM.

and the Fallout 4 Script Extender - http://f4se.silverlock.org/ This one is also not added by NMM so refer to the read.me file.

You can then select mods from there that look good to you. Hopefully, each mod will offer some installation guidelines under the mod description. Keep in mind that mod making and technical writing do not always go together.

BTW, the four best mods on the Nexus are:

Outcasts and Remnants

Heather Casdin

Fusion City Rising

Tales from the Commonwealth

Oh yeah, one other piece of advice. If you find yourself hopelessly bogged down with any of this, ask a teenager - preferably a smart nerdy one. I always turn to my youngest son for such information.

What?!!! You should always make a group of 5 or 10. People have that many fingers for a reason. So try this as a top five:

Outcasts and Remnants

Heather Casdin

Fusion City Rising

Tales from the Commonwealth

Xander's Aid
