Editing NPC Models

Hi,

I'm an experienced programmer, but a very new modder and I'm trying to alter the mesh for Dogmeat.

As a kind of test I've been trying to give him a horn, but I have run against a brick wall. For hours I have been struggling to get my new mesh onto the old skeleton. At present, I have two nif files. One contains a new mesh I created in Blender, without a bone data. The other contains the original mesh and all the skeletal data. I am working on something that will tweak the character without altering the skeleton, but every attempt I've made to copy the old skeleton data onto the new dogmeat model has failed. I tried copy/paste as branch on the skeletal data to try to get it to attach to the new model, but it won't paste properly. I don't know what to do. For reference, my workflow is below. I have spent hours trying to get this to work and have gotten nowhere. Anyone think they can help?

Original Dogmeat nif

| Export from

v Nifskope

Original Dogmeat obj

| Edit in

v Blender

Edited Dogmeat obj

| Use outfit studio in

v Bodyslide to convert to Nif

Edited Dogmeat Nif with no skeletal data

Solutions I have tried:

• Blender plugin does not seem to work at all with fallout 4 npc nif files (throws string too long error on import)

• NifSkope import option is grayed out: I have downloaded every past version I can get my hands on, all of them have it

• Copy/paste new dogmeat mesh into old nif file: This works actually, but the pasted mesh files (as mentioned) do not have bone data

• Copy/paste as branch/paste as replacement/paste/every conceivable alternative pasting option in NifSkope to get skeletal data from original mesh into new mesh: Instead of pasting the data as a child of the mesh object, it pastes it at the highest possible level as a completely new entry. I have no idea why it does this.

Thank you
