Generators "normally" only break as a possible consequence of the randomly generated "damage" (sometimes it might be random damage to food crops or water pumps/sources etc.) caused by a settlement being attacked.

AFAIK there isn't any 'wear' on generators, unless a mod has somehow added that function somehow.
