My problems so far with Vortex

So I have tried to move my heavily modded game Fallout 4 to Vortex with the import from Nexus. That didn't work so well to say the least. I ended up manually reinstall my mods (500+mods btw)
Anyway I found that some plugins regardless if I re-download them and reinstalling them replacing the old mods transfered from the import will not show plugins anywhere, I tried everything.
The load order is a mess but ok I say since I manually handle the conflicts that should be no problem. But the problem is that it counts in the numbers of the load order disabled plugins and ESL files.

Also how can I make Vortex launch F4SE and also have the steamoverlay enalbed? Ty for your amazing work in this, I hope we can all contribute to make this an amazing mod tool which is so much needed from the Mod Community!

Go to the Dashboard tab in Vortex, in the Fallout 4 game area, click "ADD TOOL", navigate to F4SE_Launcher.exe (Or whatever it's called), click SAVE.

Now, in the little box that says F4Se (or whatever you named it), click on the 3 vertical dots, and pick "MAKE PRIMARY", that will add a little flag that will make F4SE load whenever you click the PLAY button on F4SE

a) I hope you made bug reports for the problems you had with the import? I would blame this problem on: well, it is an alpha.
b) After you installed a mod it has to be deployed before the plugins show up. This normally happens automatically, maybe you've disabled that automatism?

c) Not all fomods install correctly atm. Again, this will get fixed faster if you report the mods in question
d) There are two counts: The load order does indeed count all files but mod index counts only the enabled plugins, sounds like that's more what you're looking for.

F4SE: just start from the tools widget on the dashboard? You can also select "make primary" so that f4se will be started instead of the game binary when you click the top left start button (or the taskbar icon)

Regarding steamoverlay: Not sure what the problem is? Starting f4se from Vortex shouldn't be any different from starting it through the explorer.

Hey all, thank you all for your pointers, very helpfull indeed!

a) No I haven't made a bug report yet but I will make sure to do so soon.
b) I have it automated and I see the notification of the deployment at the top right of the screen. The mods I try to install and load have to do with Sim Settlement Add Ons (some install correctly though, the ones that don't are from this amazing moders job https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/users/30795610?tab=user+files
c) It is not a Fomod, it is just a plain plugin.
d) I see, but the mod index doesn't allow me to see the total number of active plug-ins so I can see if I can install more mods or not.

regarding F4SE I followed HadToRegister suggestion and fixed it for me. Thank you!

Something very weird btw I applied to short the plugins via index and suddenly the plugins in question appeared in disabled status, previously I had the short plugins by load order. Neither with named search nor manual scrolling down would reveal them before.

EDIT: It appears that mods that are based on FOMOD during the import need to be reinstalled otherwise they don't work at all, or so it seems atm.

C) Yea, vortex seems to think plain esps in the mod folder are archives, and throws an error because it must try to "unzip" them, rather than just activating them.

I'm guessing Vortex is expecting only archive type files in the MOD directory rather than plain esps

Glad to have helped with the F4SE, have fun!

the only complaint i have is when trying to install new mods sometimes all my mods get deactivated, there is no activate/deactivate ALL button that i can find anyway

That doesn't sound right (that all mods get deactivated), sounds to me like there's some other process interfering. Are you using any other tool that fiddles with mods?

Anyway, to enable all plugins, click one of them, pres Ctrl-A and then the enable button on the bottom.

how do you use vortex only with out installing nexus???

I'm assuming by "nexus" you're referring to "Nexus Mod Manager". NMM is no longer officially in development or even officially supported. Vortex is slated to replace NMM as the official mod manager of Nexus and is very stable now. If you have NMM installed you can switch over to Vortex by installing it and using the Import from NMM feature in Vortex. I have not used that myself, and I have read about mixed results with it, but I'm betting the success rate of using that function is tied to the complexity of the mods you have running.
