CSE v8 on Windows 10 PC

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I am trying to get CSE v8 running on a Windows 10, 64bit PC. I had CSE running on my previous PC's, running XP and Vista 32bit fine. I have been absent from the forums and the game for a few years and having to re-learn, how everything works in Oblivion. I would like to know if I have done something wrong trying to install CSE, or simply CSE will not run on 64bit PC's. I have OBSE21 installed and the game not in a program file, but I am not even making it to the start screen, I just get the message failed to initialise. Hope someone can help me on this issue.

Will be grateful for a reply, thanks Chris

The CSE should work fine on Windows 10 64-bit, I use it myself that way, so that is most likely not the problem. I am not sure which initialisation message you get, but have you checked your Oblivion directory for a Construction Set Extender log file (ends in .log)? The message that you said pops up might be something like "failed to initialise CSE", but if it is that message (and if I remember correctly), I think it should also tell you to check the log for more explanation?

If you can check the CSE logfile in the Oblivion folder, then that would be a start. If there is no logfile, then that would also be a start of sorts. But I suspect the log will tell you that you are not running the CSE with administrator rights, since you mentioned having the game outside any Program Files directories and because missing VC++ redistributables probably would cause something more than just a controlled message to the user (or not, I have never tried).

Hopefully that helps a bit. Troubleshooting will continue after you have checked the logfile.

Edit: And yes, I also use version 8.0 of the CSE, forgot to mention that.

Thanks Contrathetix, Most appreciate your response, I will post copy below response from cse log.

[CSE] Construction Set Extender "Dead Dove" v8.0.10.430 Initializing...
[CSE] Checking Versions and Dependencies
[CSE] Editor isn't running with elevated privileges - It must be executed through a user account with administrator privileges
[CSE] This can be done by opening the 'File Properties' dialog for the xSE loader and editor executables and enabling the 'Run this program as an administrator' option from the 'Compatibility' tab
I have tried to open CSE as an Administrator many times, I have done all of the above but no result. Where do I go from here good buddy, I am grateful for your help, thanks

I have win10 64 bit. Runs no problem.

Did you get all the Required stuff installed first?

.NET Framework 4.0+, Microsoft Visual C+++ 2010 Redist (x86), and so on?

Do you have d3d9.dll in the game directory?

if so, use a batch launcher like this one...

https://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/47125?tab=description

as a matter of fact, it may be a work around for your admin privilege issue

Hi Moktah, I have been thro requirements of CSE, tried to update them, but mostly told I have a newer version installed or they are not compatible with my version of windows. Our old friend d3d9.dll did help with your version of my launch batch file. At least the windows cmd window stayed open long enough for me to read it! It repeatedly tries to shove d3d9.dll to back up, followed by access denied. I have been thro every executable, including d3d9.dll and given it full control by user or administrator. But still CSE fails to initialise correctly. I am reaching the end of my tether with this. It just seems that Microsoft are determined to end retro gaming and force you to buy something from their app store!

Thanks for your help and suggestions, best wishes Chris

It is possible to make things work! The log snippet you posted makes it seem like you are not running the CSE as administrator for whatever reason. I have been trying to work around it myself (because I use a non-administrator account for non-administrative tasks like gaming and modding) but the CSE just seems extremely stubborn. Need to check the source code at some point to see if there is some tiny thing in there to work around it like with the directory check (but probably there is not). I hope shademe will one day remove the requirement somehow, if at all possible. I would really not want to run things as administrator, I mean, the CSE is the only thing I need to run as administrator and it feels so absurd.

Anyway, from what I have noticed, with the Steam version of Oblivion, only obse_loader.exe needs to be set to run as administrator. It is the only single thing that needs to be run that way. No compatibility modes are required for anything at all and no other executable needs to be set to run as administrator. Have you tried that? As in, right-click obse_loader.exe, tick the "run as administrator" box and then launch CS(E) with

obse_loader.exe -editor

from a command prompt (hold shift, right-click in Oblivion folder and select "open PowerShell here" or whichever option you have).

The thing about those d3d9.dll and launchers and stuff is that, if you have a d3d9.dll from something like ENB or similar in your Oblivion folder, you can rename it to "_d3d9.dll" for example while you are running the editor and rename it back when the editor closes, which I suspect the batch files available on Nexus also do (I wrote my own batchfile, so I have not checked the others). The CSE will not run with d3d9.dll in the game folder for some reason, and the only way one such file would have ended up there is from ENB usually, or Reshade or similar.

Hopefully that helps a bit. To start, you could remove all compatibility modes and administrator rights from all the executables and dlls and whichever you may have applied the options to, and then set obse_loader.exe to run as administrator and test it. It should work.

I have similar issues. I don't have d3d9 (at least, I can't find it), but I get the command window messages saying "access denied" over and over. I hate Windows 10.
