Some of my textures are VERY poor quality

I don't know if this is something that I did or not, but somehow I started having an issue where some textures are extremely poor quality. Like Super Nintendo quality graphics. Some textures are perfectly fine. The problem seems to affect both vanilla objects and objects that are from a mod. (Though I don't really know hardly anything about how textures and meshes work, I think it's possible that some of the mod items could be utilizing already-existing vanilla textures.) And I've even noticed the problem on objects on the loading screen.

For example, today on my loading screen it was showing a suit of Minuteman power armor from the "We Are The Minutemen" mod. It was totally garbage graphic quality.

Some vanilla objects look fine, some are low quality. Some mod objects are fine, some are low quality. (Though I haven't noticed any problems with things that I've modded with HD textures. All those items are immaculate.)

Here are some screenshots I took to demonstrate what I'm talking about.

*Actually, ambient occlusion is set at HBAO+ (Ultra). This screenshot was taken while I was troubleshooting, and HBAO is usually what I have it set at.

I am running an i5-4590; MSI R9 390 (8GB VRAM); 16GB RAM. My machine has been able to run these settings just fine since the game's release. Normally around 48-55 FPS with "normal" action, dips as low as 25-30 in demanding circumstances.

I am using optimized textures from the "Texture Optimization Project" (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/978) I did this optimization several months ago and I never experienced any texture problems until just recently. I don't suspect this is related to the problem but I felt it relevant enough to mention.

I did an .ini tweak recently. I found it on NMM in the mod "Texture Load Workaround". I suspect this could be the culprit, as I noticed the texture issue roughly around the same time I did this tweak. Since the tweak didn't provide me with the results I hoped for (and when I realized my texture issue) I removed the new lines from my Fallout4.ini. Didn't fix the textures. So I also added the default values in manually (default values were listed in TLW mod). That didn't work either.

I'm all out of ideas, so I'm hoping to get some help from the forum. Thanks!

Get bilbaos config tool for editing your Ini files.

In texture tab click recommended.

On performance tab set -1 for mipmap/texture quality.

If this fails reset your Ini files and see if the issue remains.

If this fails it's because you have too many texture mods installed. Usually is caused by having too many loose textures but can be because of ba2 compressed as well.

Chances are though, you just messed up your Ini somewhere.

Phonix means Bilago's Configuration Tool.

Also have a look at BethINI, a tool to do some extra tweaking to the betterment of the gaming pleasure.

Personally, I've never had issues with "too many texture" mods. I mean, the game has to render textures anyway, so, it doesn't matter how many you overwrote. It only matters for GPU taxation and V-RAM/system RAM use when going higher grade. HD textures in 4K can take a fraction longer to stream, but your rig can handle it. I'm on an i7-3770K and an MSI RX470 8GB and I don't have a problem with the over one-hundred texture mods I've installed, both 2K and 4K, playing in 1080p.

You also have to remember that, as I briefly mentioned, FO4 uses in-game streaming for the images instead of direct rendering. This can cause the textures from staying blurry for a while before the sharpness pops-in. Sometimes they stay blurry because of RAM not flushing fast enough or not at all.

There's also better texture mods than the Optimisation one you're using. I mean, it's not bad, but mods like the Vivid series by Hein84 or Flaconoil's HD ReTexture Pack will give more satisfaction...

Ok, so i have tried ALL the suggestions put forth in this thread. (Except employing other mods. I want to fix the problem before I paint over it, but I likely will try the HD ReTexture Pack once I get this issue resolved. I already have the complete Vivid mod.) I have reset my .ini's to default, and used both BethINI and Bilago's Configuration Tool. Enabled mipmap fix (set to -1 in B's CT) and used the 'recommended' setting for textures. It seems to have SOMEWHAT worked. Still have very poor texture quality sometimes, and other times it's great. For instance, my player's outfit is no longer blurry. It's back to normal, high quality graphics. But I'm still encountering many instances where things still look like absolute crap. I mainly notice it on outfits and on buildings--the corrugated tin texture, wallpaper, wooden floors, etc. But the problem is not necessarily limited to those.

Does this give any more clues as to what the problem could be? Could the issue be an .ini tweak that is embedded into my save? I know that the 'uGridsToLoad' setting can screw you up long term, but can any of the other tweaks do the same?

JimmyRJump, this seems to me like it could be related to my problem. This was actually the first thing I thought of when I started experiencing it. Like the textures load when I'm far away, but it never improves in quality as I get closer like it should. (Again, I don't really know how this stuff works but that's what seemed intuitive to me.) Sometimes those screwed-up textures do 'refresh' and are back to normal quality. But not very often, and I've never seen it happen before my eyes. I don't recall if it has happened while I remain in the same area or if I come back to it later, but I do remember seeing some particular buildings that looked crappy, and seeing them later they looked normal.

EDIT: It seems that whenever I first start up the game, everything around me loads in full quality. It's when I move around to other areas that I start noticing the poor quality. I quit my game last night on the pier on the east side of Salem. All the corrugated tin buildings looked like horse shite. Just fired up my game right now, they look beautiful. This is not the first time I've noticed this.

We all suffered of the blurry mess at one point or another and often still do after longer stints in the game (over four hours or some such). Most of it boils down to FO4 -besides being badly optimised for PC- not making use of RAM very well and it got worse -in my experience- when Bethesda switched to this streaming process as of v1.3 or 1.4 of the game. This was done to alleviate stress on the GPU through direct rendering. But the streaming option makes textures appear gradually instead of immediately. Gradually in the sense that not everything is plonked into the game at once. It's like heavy industrial electrical machinery which has to be started-up in stages to not blow the fusebox off the wall when it asks for 500 amps in one go.

It has gotten better with more recent versions of the game. I quit playing a year or so ago at v1.9 and some and updated to v1.10.50 back in September and have kept from upgrading since. I still have the blurriness at times, but not as often as before. Maybe for you there's still some settings that are off a bit, but even after 13000-plus hours in the game, I haven't got the know-how to be able to say what exactly can be done to ameliorate things...

One thing to try is the ENBoost proggie. It makes the game use System RAM as V-RAM and overall stabilises the game a bit. Wether this will make RAM work better is another question, but it doesn't hurt to try. I have 16GB of system RAM and 8GB of V-RAM but kept using ENBoost nevertheless, set (in its ini file) to 12288MB.

This was it! At some point I had edited my enblocal.ini file, and had VideoMemorySizeMb set to ~9600 or something. I upped it to 12288 and that seems to have solved my problem! I've played a few days with the new setting and haven't had a single instance of 1990's graphics. My game is beautiful again, thank you!

Going to give FlaconOil's HD ReTextures a try soon and hopefully make it even more so.

Not a bad choice either. Some very good textures in there without compromising fps.

Am glad things worked out alright for you in the end ;)

I am a photographer and if you want to increase the quality of your textures, pick 2560x1440 resolution, Antialiasing = OFF ... why ? Because this filter will SMOOTH your textures to avoid jagged edges in your textures. Nikon cameras without that filter, are sharper than Nikon cameras which have this filter on the camera sensor.

Also, what I do is to have : motion blur : OFF, Godrays = OFF ( if you cannot turn it off in the above menu, use the console command and type gd off - I think it is - ), Decal and Lighting quality = HIGH or MEDIUM ( you will have more fps and in reality by having these two features on ULTRA will not make your textures better, Shadow Quality = HIGH and Texture Quality = ULTRA.

That is what I do and my game looks sharper than having all those features in the way you have it.

If you have a 165 Hz monitor, I do recommend to download GRAFIX mod ( only this one ) and your game will looks fantastic. Having this mod in your load order will drop some fps but still you will get enough to have a good performance.

I am able to keep my fps between 50 to 144, depending where I am and sometimes it goes down to even 40 ( for a few seconds ) but because I do have WOTC ( War of the Commonwealth and setup to Weekend Warrior ) plus Raider Overhaul, Mutants Overhaul and Robots as well, I do have a lot of spawn ( dozens at a time ) and obviously, that will make my fps to go down but not for a long time and depending where I am fighting.

Hope that helps ! Happy gaming !
