Long-time lurker, here. I haven't made a mod before, so I thought it'd be inappropriate to post this in the modders section.

Concept: trick the game into allowing multi-piece modular armor sets without ever messing with the built-in armor slotting system.

Method: create a base armor item for light and heavy, let's say a gambeson. Apply armor pieces (cuirass, pauldrons, greaves) to the gambeson at the workbench. As far as the game is concerned, it's a distinct item which takes up the standard 1 equip slot on the actor. Partially inspired by Fallout 4's armor/weapon modding system.

This would allow single/mismatched pauldrons and otherwise expand the variety of armor appearances, all without cluttering up the forge/tanning rack with 20 versions of the same item.

Think this is feasible? What would be a good starting point in trying to construct such a mod?

Pure speculation section:

Design it so rigid armor pieces are merely anchored to the gambeson (like sheathed weapons), rather than becoming part of the mesh, so they are not subject to any warping with actor animations. This would probably introduce too many clipping issues to be worth the hassle. Just a thought.

I can't say for sure , but I don't quite think this idea is doable , because Skyrim simply doesn't have the same functionality with item modding

there are no workbenches where you can apply parts to weapons and armors in Skyrim (and I haven't seen any mods that do something like this)

the only "workbench" you have is a forge , and this only allows you to create items

what this means is that you'll probably have to create every single possible combination of parts possible as it's own armor (with it's own unique model and texture) , and assign a recipe for each one of these items

a different way that may be possible is to create different pieces from existing armors (so take apart the chest armor , leg armors , shoulder guards etc) , and assign each to a specific body node (so that chest armor only takes the chest slot etc)

you would have to make sure that there are enough slots for all of the items (I don't remember how many slots exist in the game , but some are used by mods like Dual Sheath Redux or SOS , so it would require fiddling around to make this compatible with other mods)

I'm far from a modding expert , especially regarding models and textures and how the game uses them

so I may be completely wrong on this

but I somehow doubt that this is really that feasible without requiring tons of work (if it isn't so complicated , I think someone would have done it by now)

better wait for more knowledgeable individuals to comment on the matter before you'll know for sure
