At first, I was trying to make a new animal follower from scratch in the creation kit. I followed several tutorials exactly, step-by-step, but whenever I went in game to test, the animal would have the "[E] Talk to (animal name)" as usual, but when I'd press E, no dialogue would follow. In fact, absolutely nothing happened. I chalked this up to maybe I can't follow directions, but I downloaded another mod that has an animal follower from someone else and I'm having the same issue. Whenever I look up this problem, people either have issues with the actual recruiting process but can still talk to the animal (getting a "you are already in command of a companion" message) and the few people who have my problem (not being able to talk at ALL) briefly mention it but there are no answers. I tried going into console and typing "set playeranimalcount 0" but I get a message like, "error. Missing the "to" in code," whatever that means. I don't have any other animal followers either because I haven't done the quests to get them. In the original version of Skyrim, not special edition, I downloaded a mod that had a Link Wolf follower that seemed to work fine but that mod has been removed long ago.
