Vortex still looks dated...

I'm not trying to be rude or anything though I don't think Vortex *looks* the part. The UI just feels off. It's not terrible though if this is the UI we'll be dealing with for another couple years (say the length of NMM until Vortex was first released to the public), I am slightly disappointed.

 

Usually I don't like sharing my opinion online if it has anything negative as I always feel I'm coming off rude, though I used NMM and MO a LOT and I was hoping this would replace both with Vortex. NMM didn't have the best interface, but then again it was developed awhile ago. MO wasn't the best either (far from bad though), though I didn't really care because I knew Tannin was just trying to make a really good MO and was doing it for free. Now that we have Vortex, I feel like we should strive for both a nice UI and UX.

 

Again, it's not a terrible design and it does work (for the most part). Though for the year 2018 it feels dated by stuff like (now this is bad comparison), but LOOTs design looks nice and simple.

functionality is always more important than design.

 

Having said that, I still liked MO better than the current version of Vortex. It had it's quirks, but it was really suited for people who understood things quite well.

 

But, that made it also very hard to use for beginners and casual modders.

 

Vortex tries to fit both groups, but it still has some way to go to achieve that.

Give some examples. "Looks dated" is completely devoid of actionable information.

"Say, that new Ford truck sure looks dated". Not as useful as saying "Maybe ditch the tail fins".

I didn't want to go listing of every little detail I found off so I summarized it by comparing it to another application UI/UX.

Yes, though when you get paid to do so, they should come hand-in-hand. Especially using Electron, there's plenty of frameworks that would've made this pop.

Perhaps you could fill the information here a little; what specifically about Vortex's UI is off? The colour scheme? The layout?

For your comparison, what specifically did you like and dislike about the NMM UI? The stark writing on black background? The file-tree layout? The in-window download & install progress meters? What specifically did you like and dislike about the MO UI?

 

With the context from these specific features that you like/dislike, what specifically could be changed to make the Vortex UI not "feel off"?

For example:

 

The Vortex UI incorporates a lot of the site into the main interface, automatically arranges a variety of useful modding tools, and has colour.

 

It details what file is currently downloading in the bottom corner, and offsets that with installation progress information in the opposite top corner, a rather modern, organic design principle.

 

It quickly and clearly isolates if there are file conflicts, missing masters, or duplicate files, and offers simple solutions for these situations.

 

From my perspective, there's little I can find fault with on these points.
