Vortex Mod Naming Changes

My biggest issue with Vortex is the way it names mods. Sometimes it does this well example : Unlimited Followers, Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch, and Legendary Modification- DLC and Additional Fixes (ENG). Other times its abysmal EBT_Basic, Place (Fallout4 1.10.75 - latest release), NNA NAC- NMM Installer - v1.6. I get the manager is trying to shorten the names for simplicity but with all the space the Mod Name catagory has it shouldn't be doing it this often if at all. Probably going to be sticking with NMM until something is improved upon in names.

You do realize that those names come from the Mod authors and not Vortex? Also, you can rename any installed Mod as you please by double clicking it in the list to open the data panel on the right.

Doesn't work for me, I can't change the name AT ALL

CBBE in Fallout 4 is listed as "Repaired God 44 Pistol", when I double click on the mod, I can't change the name

It'd be nice to rename any UNINSTALLED or NOT YET INSTALLED mod too.

Because I can't change the name of a yet to be installed mod, and I have 2 instances of ROBOCO FUN2 in my "Not yet installed" load order, how can I tell which one is actually CBBE, or DEF_UI?

Problem with t his is I have 400 mods I already renamed in Windows...now when I installed them Vortex renamed them all to mod name.

An option to KEEP filename would be nice.

It imported them in Vortex fine from the folders with my filenames, but as soon as I click install, it renames them.

(Sorry for necro, didn't feel a new topic was required for same issue)

I would argue it's a bad idea to rename the archive. For one thing, with the original name Vortex can usually identify the mod id of the archive and will then be able to find further information about the mod (like name, description, author, ...).

Also, as long as you keep the name as is, you will get warned if you try to download the same file again.

Thus my suggestion, and the way Vortex has been designed is: The archive is a "source" of information, not something you edit. Everything attached to it, the name, meta information and the content of the archive is left as the author provided it and then the installed mod is the part that you customize.

Yes, that means the download directory and download page can be messy, but the content of the archives is messy as well, every mod author packages the mod in a different way.

The mod installation is where things get sorted out and are put into the proper structure (mod files are put in a common layout, files are named, ...), _that_ is the correct place to also name things in a reasonable way.

Are there any adverse consequences of changing an installed mod's Name? Does it interfere with update checks, for instance, or anything else?

And what of installing updates for mods that have been renamed? Do the updates force the restoration of the default names? If the renaming survives mod updates, how persistent is it? Does it also survive uninstallation and reinstallation of affected mods? (I think that it should: do it once and never have to do it again.)

As a corollary question, are Category changes persistent for mods, once changed, regardless of installation state, or are they wiped clean to defaults when a mod is uninstalled and reinstalled? (Again, I think they should be persistent.)

If made truly persistent, the defaults should also be stored as metadata, and context options made available per mod (or per selection) to restore those defaults when needed. It would suck to want to restore a default mod name and be forced to reinstall the mod just to achieve that.
