Skyrim VR and Steam - what's the deal?

Recommended Posts

I'm considering getting the Oculus Rift and buying Skyrim VR from my Steam Account. Please could someone enlighten me on the Steam side of things?

  • I prefer to play off-line, I never play on line. I'm not interested in the on-line 'friends, community, awards' stuff etc. (Obviously I have the Steam App running, but I choose off-line mode). Yep I'm a miserable old s*d!
  • I use MO2 and launch the game that way, happy in my non on-line world.

Can I continue this style of play with Skyrim VR? Or does the VR Skyrim demand Steam is active and connected on-line? I can't see that it should.

The reason I ask about forced on-line play, is I hear that Steam prefer the HTC Vive (something to do with Zenithar) which may prejudice the choice of Rift. Obviously, I may be misinformed.

I don't want to buy the Rift and end up being VR-crippled by an anti-Rift attitude at Steam.

The Rift would suit my style of play better. (and it is cheaper!)

Any replies gratefully received. Thanks for your time!

Totally off your topic, but your signature made me laugh out loud. If you're going to lock up your sweet rolls, that's the place to do it.

Thanks!

I use the Vive and i'm sure i've played off-line. No reason why a rift wouldn't. But since you are wanting to know for sure first - i'm sure someone here can confirm it.

That's good to know. I just want to know for sure the Rift isn't going to make Steam blow up, or something!

I've just done a little more research and it seems I have to use Steam VR application to handle Skyrim VR, which I assume is simply the VR version of the regular Steam app, and can be used off line?

Still not 100% about using it offline - but again, cant see any reason.

Besides, even if you cant - you can still make your steam private by putting your profile status as "offline". (if privacy is your thing and you want to appear offline).

This might help with setting up.

Steam that you have will look the same - its just a VR tool will be running as soon as you use your rift. (soon as i press a button on my vive controller - steam (if running) will automatically fire up this tool and activate the headset)

As far as I know - people with the rift can play skyrim vr with no problems. Fallout 4 came out with some issues at first - but i think skyrim vr came out ready to go.

Oh wait.. no. Sorry.. I meant to say it wouldnt work. The rift wont work with Skyrim VR or Steam tools.

Should have made that clear before.

*stares at you waiting for a reaction*

:)

HeHe. No probs. Mate - you wait. You'll be blown away. "Pancake" (love this new term... like "Vanilla" and such) version will just seem..... well... empty and disconnected. I mean, I still enjoy Skyrim SE - playing with the family (kids love it. They are a bit too young to play it themselves) but when alone - Skyrim VR all the way.

I look forward to it!

Meanwhile my brand new internal USB extension card lasted 3 seconds before it died. That's the shortest life span I've ever had for a computer component! Damn. I'll have to bodge my setup until I can get it replaced. :geek:
