CTDs well.. everywhere please save me... (Ready Description)

I don't even know what to do anymore. I've been playing for more than a week now on this run and I'm about to just give up completely and go play something else.

NOTE: Most of the CTD's I'm about to list don't even happen every time so when they would happen and then subside moments later I would just continue on with my run but now they aren't going away.

1. My current problem is I CTD when I load into any of my recent saves. Whether It'd be an auto-save, a hard-save, or a quick-save I will CTD during the load screen. But it isn't even guaranteed because sometimes I will load in but then this leads to my next problem which is in problem number two. (Also a pattern I seem to notice is if I try to load into the same save multiple times I will CTD but If I load into a previous save and then load into the save while in-game I will also CTD. And then when I restart the game and load back into the save I was having problems with in the first place I will manage to load in but it doesn't even matter due to the next few problems:

2. If I actually do manage to get into a save I will CTD when I try to save my game. This happens the instant I click the save button. Whether it'd be a quick-save or a hard-save It will instantly CTD as soon as I hit the button. This wasn't happening before so I don't know why it is happening now because I haven't add any mods or changed anything.

3. Another brand new problem is once again if I manage to get into my recent saves I cannot leave my current cell or I will CTD. I was trying to see if I go somewhere else and then save it would help problem number two but nope it didn't. Currently I'm in the Riverwood trader and if I leave through the doors I CTD and if I save I CTD. This doesn't have anything to do with the Riverwood trader because I tried going back into a previous save and I would also CTD when I leave or try to save.

4. This is an old problem that I ignored for a while but whenever I would die I would sometimes CTD. If I continued past a certain part where I kept dying and then die somewhere else it would be fine so that's why I ignored it. This happened multiple times throughout my run but like I said I've been ignoring it.

Here is my mod order:

I have done all the generic stuff like checking to see if I had the right compatibility patches for mods, run LOOT for my load order, use SSEEdit to clean my s***, and all that jazz. That's why I have resorted to posting here. Thanks in advance.

Am I screwed? As painful as it is Im considering restarting with a fresh new list. I haven't completed the main Dragon story line and I just got the first Elder Scroll, I haven't even touched the Civil War story line, and I haven't done Vampires, Companions, Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, or College stuff either. Should I just restart now instead of going any further and just minimize the damage or is there actually a way to fix all these saves issues.

Ok so here are a few things:

1. You dont need both LAL - New Beginnings and Bruma. Pick one for your playthru.

2. JKs Skyrim and Thunderchild patch actually isnât necessary. It barely changes a thing and is a wasted mod slot

3. If this is SE, I recommend not using alpha Race Menu.

4. You might want to check around your mod pages for any AFT related patches. I know there are a few and none of them are listed on AFTs page.

Aside from that, Iâm unsure. You should make a batch patch for leveled lists. Donât see that one on there.

Your saves are likely corrupted. If you really want to fix them, youll have to clean them. Otherwise, I recommend just starting over after you clean and reset your mod installation.

Did you uninstall or attempt to uninstall a mod and have the mod manager or NMM crash? This can cause CTDs real hard because your game searched for files that the manager was able to delete before crashing.

I am not sure why nobody asked you to show your load order. Please do show in spoiler tag.

I just returned to Skyrim only for less than a month. One of the main reason (or perhaps the only reason) is how unstable Skyrim was). Anyway, Skyrim SE seems to be much more solid than before. By solid, I mean, if you screw something up, please immediately CTD (so I can undo whatever I just did) instead of letting me play on and just CTD at a certain point in certain location, like a time bomb trap. Who knows how long that corruption had been there.

Anyway, I have experienced CTD on load lately, twice. Both times it comes down to XP32 skeleton installation. The skeleton itself is solid. I uninstalled the mod, only to keep the skeleton, and it worked. Then second time the game started to act up, I came to conclusion that SKEE (a SKSE64 plugin) is unstable. I reinstalled XP32 for the skeleton, keep it in, but delete SKEE. Everything works. I am running without XP32 features (like custom animation and slots) but it's stable.

So just maybe, you are in the same boat as me.

As useless as my advice might be... do not use the very latest XPMSE; it gave me a problem not exactly to do with XPMSE, but an interaction with another mod that caused the XPMSE Weaponscale script to go mental. I got a load of CTDs out of it due to the overload.

I use the 4.20 and it works fine for me. It also works happily with the current SKEE and any Racemenu conversion.

Do make sure your Racemenu plugins are properly converted; they could easily cause this sort of issue.

If you don't have a strong machine, you do have a lot of heavy mods. And that might add to the failure rate.

You'll probably need to back track to a solid working save, as the ones you have now could be corrupted. Use the Fallrim Tools "Re-Saver" to examine your saves and, if needed, clean them of broken scripts.

And switch off all auto-saving. It's a Bethesda Bodge of Doom that is known to ruin a good game. Just manually do a hard save from time to time.

You should consider using Wrye Bash and create a Bash Patch which will sort levelled items and reduce conflicts in those tables. (It's on Nexus).

Good luck!

Ah I see the load order added in. Nice site to show load order.

BlueGunk is absolutely right. Despite how XPMSE creator says about proper installation, my game was locked in CTD until I removed SKEE (a SKSE64 plugin). It effectively disables all XPMSE features. But I was happy the game works because the skeleton works and plays nice with SOS, Joy of Perspective, and other mods that deal with skeleton. Then I just went back to 4.2.0 to see how it went. It works, with all 4.2.0 features. I use ECE so my experience differs than with Racemenu. I strongly believe that is the cause of your CTD. And again thanks to Bluegunk, now I know "interaction with another mod that invokes Weaponscale script" is the cause of XPMSE to CTD. I think this was accordance to how I kept CTD in the past.

On another note: should alternate start be so low in load order? I did try that mod some 100+ years ago (read: very long ago). But for the interest of smooth gaming, I pretty much don't care how my character starts. My safety save is around Helgen anyway. And if need be, restarting a new game from scratch doesn't seem to be an ordeal, comparing to hours and hours spent fixing CTD.

For role players, alternate start is a huge thing.

Anyway, yea Iâve seen nothing but gripes and complaints about skee/Race Menu not working with skse in SE. itâs become an daily CTD complaint. :/ Best advice is to race menu your character in Oldrim, convert it to facegen save data and add it to your Skyrim SE character, assuming you have the same beautification mods in SE, it should look good.

I'm glad my experience helped! But there's no need to remove SKEE. It was XPMSE 4.31 latest version with the weaponscale script that caused me issues due to an interaction with another mod I use.

SKEE and XPMSE 4.2 work fine together. I notice there is now a fix for the SKEE side of things with 4.31 on the XPMSE page.

However, if you used Tooneyman's useful video tutorial for converting Racemenu, he mistakenly includes the "HUDExtension" element of the SKEE Alpha Build. HUDExtension is designed for another mod.

So if you have put HUDExtension into the game, chuck it out. It causes instant CTD.
