3D model assets

Recommended Posts

Can I use 3D models/ obj files/ nif files etc for a mod if I purchase them online or if they come free?

Or, will the mod be taken down if it contains such types of assets that are not made but are purchased?

I ask because there are some really nice armors on some sites that would be good for Fallout 4. They are generally about $60 to buy one outfit. I guess it is supposed to be for personal use only and not to share for free as a mod. but how about textures or models that are offered free with programs such as Bryce pro 7 or others?

Just my 2 cents:

It doesn't matter if you create assets yourself, buy them or get 'em for free- what matters is, if you own them (eg. the provider owns and transfers the necessary rights to you).

Bought 3D models normally come with a license, that precisely defines what it is allowed to be used for (personal use only, royality free ... )

What is forbidden for sure is content, that is ripped from other games or other media without the creators/owners permission - no matter if you ripped it yourself or bought it from a shady seller.

Another thing: i would be careful with buying armor. It needs to be skinned for the game's skeleton and adjusted/ported correctly. Requires some skills and time, so if you can't do it yourself or someone does it for you you're pretty screwed.

Lots of these type mods have been taken down over the years. Even if you "buy" them they have a limited way you can use them. Typically they are for personal use and the terms when buying them should tell you these things. DAZ, Poser all those you listed come with pretty limited use. However you can do whatever you want in your own game. We don't care but if you aren't by the rules able to upload this then you cant ask questions about that specific, you should not put it on the image share, etc.

Now let's just assume for a moment that they mesh is ok to use however you want.

First of all you have to be sure the meshes you wish to buy are not a stolen asset. Did the person make these from scratch or did they port a mesh from somewhere like another game, etc. (A great deal of things out there use ported/ripped meshes.) It is your responsibility to make sure these are ok.

Next you check the permissions of use when you buy it. As I said these are not typically things you can use outside of personal use. Most of the time it is more like a rental than a buy, but I digress.

Personally, I haven't seen any that got ported from these 3D sites that are able to be used here. You have to have specific permission (If it doesn't list any permission saying you can use this in any way you want, or in other games then the default is NO.) I wouldn't do it but if you are determined I suggest you show specifically what you are want to use, where ti comes from (link) and any terms, conditions, etc that come with it. Show it to a moderator (In a PM please not here) and we can better tell you if you can upload it here or not.

ok thanks for replies. Sorry for late response. Sounds like even when they say "free to use" its best to steer clear.

The other thing I had in mind was from DAZ or Bryce.. I cant remember.. but It auto generates a random, basic wire frame for say, a pine tree. And then you can change it quite easily to customize it. But, kinda sounds too easy and is probably also subject to license usage. IDK, I'd have to read through the terms and conditions, but who ever actually does that? haha
