CTD a lot - Save my Load Order

Recommended Posts

I am experiencing more CTD's than I can bear. I suspect it is due to my Load Order. Would you be so kind as to take a look at it? One very specific spot I CTD is upstairs in the Arcadium in the College of Winterhold but there are many more places I CTD.

I will take any suggestion or tip!

Hi

Hope I can help. Here's two things that you can check right away:

Bijin AIO.esp=1
Bijin NPCs.esp=1
Bijin Warmaidens.esp=1
Bijin Wives.esp=1

You only need the AIO esp for this group. The other three esps should not be active BUT the meshes, textures and other parts of the other three mods need to be active so the AIO can pick them up.

The AIO esp should be last of the four. If you use MO2, it is easy to remove the esps using the "Optional ESPs" tab in each mod information box. If not, maybe manually 'hide' them by renaming the extension esp to something like es0.

Secondly

C Head Tracking - MCM.esp=1

PC Head Tracking - Patch.esp=1

Please make sure you have the very latest release of this mod. The earlier versions suffered save freezes and CTDs if the MCM menu was set to Speaker + Crosshair.

Other than that, I assume you sort your load order by LOOT? If not, it is a necessity.

You do seem to have a lot of script-heavy and world-changing mods! These could overload the game anyway and you'll get random crashes as memory blows out.

And...I know it is a lovely mod, but in such a busy game you could do yourself a favour and remove SkyBirds. It loads the game a lot which is no fault of the mod, it is just simply a heavy mod, and may be the tipping point for you.

And you may wish to review some of your other mod choices. Lots of scripts, and lots of cell-changing / NPC changing mods might just end up being too much, especially with texture packs added.

If you remove any mods, you will need to use the Re-Saver tool to clean broken scripts, which is part of the Fallrim Tools https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/5031 . Save, clean, save and keep checking until you have a clean save.

Good luck!

Thank you for your replies, especially to BlueGunk for your detailed help.

After a long fight with NMM it got the better of me. So I opted for a clean install with MO2.

This time I am going for the same mod list with many performance/optimisation tweaks.

- I always thought I had only enabled the Bijin AIO.esp=1 I always read the descriptions very carefully.

- I will remove SkyBirds from my load order. R.I.P.

- I already use SSE Fixes and I believe it increases performance when using many plugins, not solve crashes

- I will check PC Headtracking for the latest version

How do texture packs influence this? I have a 1080ti so that is 11GB of video memory, texture packs should not be an issue right?

Also, what is a good way to judge whether or not a mod is script heavy? I mean, without knowing the mod? I want to cut some script heavy mods but the things I need to keep are:

- Texture Mods

- Jk's skyrim + dawn of skyrim overhauls

- Immersive college of winterhold (very script heavy) but I cannot play a mage without it

I also want to change up my NPC texture mods. I get the "brown face/grey face" bug a lot but am not sure how to solve this.

1080ti  I'm jealous! I'm running a 980ti.

Texture packs, especially if you use 4k, would be no problem for your card, but Skyrim processes everything through the CPU. So you can have all the goodies you want but the CPU is the bottleneck. Hence 'balance' is a good approach.

I now have a smooth Skyrim with my 980ti, but in the first two attempts at my SE game I threw everything into the pot and killed it. Not just through textures, but increasing script lag, missing menus, and save corruptions.

There are a few pages around that list the heavy mods - Google it and look at the Nexus page, like the "best mod list for Skyrim SE", that sort of stuff.

Brown face bugs come from two (or more) esps / texture mods altering the face of the NPC. For instance, I run: Diversifying Skyrim, Bijin, Babes of Skyrim and Immersive / Deadly Wenches.

Take Alvor in Riverwood: SkyrimSE.esm gives him a face. Diversifying Skyrim makes him fat (lol). Apachii hairs might change his hair, affecting the FaceGen.nif for Alvor and bingo: brown face = interferes with SkyrimSE.esm.

So, load order of NPC changing mods is critical. You'll still get the occasional brown face but when I spot them, I regenerate them via the Creation Kit. MO2 is a real help sorting these mods.

My load order is: Babes (gets overwritten if needed), Diversifying Skyrim (overwritten when needed), Bijin. So Bijin will win all the time, and NPCs not affected by Bijin will benefit from the other mods.

Immersive / Deadly Wenches is self generating additional NPCs, and are not affected.

Once again, thank you for your detailed information.

Men of Winter is an amazing mod which also caused the brown face bug for some characters for me. I have heard ppl load it into the CK to update Facegen data. I have done just that but nothing changed. What do you do with the CK in order to get them working?

It's likely another mod is over-writing Men of Winter (like possibly a skin texture, teeth or eye mod?), and / or is altering the face NIFs on the same people. Like: Skyrim.ESM over-run by Men of Winter is fine, the FaceGen NIF is altered once.

Throw another mod into the mix and there's the dark face bug as the FaceGen NIF has the Skyrim.ESM base and two other mods fighting over it. Don't forget Dawnguard can also add to the mess as it overwrites some Skyrim.esm faces. The Vampire Dark Face Bug is a well known problem!

Have a poke around your mods, see if any might overrun Men of Winter or is operating on the same NPCs. Run SSEEdit's conflict analyser.

If it is a mod-added NPC then that's down to install and load orders (both left and right panes in MO2 if you use it).

As for the Creation Kit, I identify the character having the dark face bug. Say it is Alvor (he's a bog-standard NPC). Load the Creation Kit, and load up the basic Skyrim.esm. Check the list on the left, Actors, and find Alvor in the list. Highlight him and hit CTRL F4. That re-generates the original face. Allow it a few seconds to do it and confirm.

Close Creation Kit and you are all done - the generated face gets recreated in the ESM so there are no files to move around. If you have a list of NPCs you can do them all at once.

Hope you get it working!

Regarding NPC mods (I also use a lot of them...): As Bluegunk pointed out, load order matters. In some cases this will already solve all your problems, in others it won't. These are the situations that need patching.

The very correct approach now would be to manually create a compatibility patch in Xedit/SSEEdit. You can/should do this, but it can be a lot of work. An easier way is to simply use "Mator Smash":

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/90987

At least for me, creating a "smashed patch" with Mator Smash always removed any black face issues. Give it a try.
