Fallout 4 Crashing on Exit

Like most people I've experienced random CTD's with this game but now I have a regular problem - the game crashes every time I exit to desktop. The game actually freezes and I can't close it with device manager so my only option is a restart or shutdown. I have about 20-25 mods installed with NMM and sorted with LOOT. I've even followed the FO4Edit cleaning guide and cleaned the DLC.

First off, set the FO4 launcher to play in Windowed mode, Fullscreen. That way, when the game freezes you can simply hit the Windows key and close the game through the taskbar entrance.

Secondly, please add your load order between

tags. You can copy/paste the content of the plugins.txt file located at X:\Users\*Your Name*\AppData\Local\Fallout4.

I have tried that but I'm still getting crashes. Gone back to NMM and manually checked versions of mods. Looks like many were out of date and NMM has not automatically retrieved new ID's. Now I'm going to see what happens in game. Thanks again.

UPDATE: Updating mods made no difference. I have been exiting in two stages and the game goes non-responsive on the final checkout, so to speak. Just tried a new game and it quit no problem.

Happens when you install mods mid game I think, at least for me it did, found out the hard way, had to use ctrl/alt/delete to bring up task manager to quit a non-responsive Fallout 4.

I recently started a new game because of an different conflict issue. Anyway, this problem returned after I started importing settlements with transfer settlements. Absolutely no issues in game; only when I exit. I have tried disabling autosave on exit to no avail. I also tried exiting to main menu and then exiting game. Still hangs. Interestingly enough, the autosave does work because after I logout and log back in, the saved game is there. I have also checked the saved games out with Resaver and it does not find any issues.
