Character Wearing The Wrong Armor

Hoo boy, this is a weird one.

I recently started a new game, with a bunch of mods loaded up that seemed to be working fine together, but today when I popped in The Drunken Huntsman in Whiterun, I noticed that Jenassa was wearing studded imperial armor instead of the leather armor she was supposed to. I thought this seemed inappropriate for her character, so I went to find the mod that was causing this so I could edit it in the Creation Kit and get back to playing. The only problem is, from what I can tell, it's not a single mod that's causing this!

This is the load order I've been playing the game with:

[Plugin 001] Name: Skyrim.esm

But I managed to narrow it down to these files that trigger this bug:

[Plugin 001] Name: Skyrim.esm
[Plugin 002] Name: Update.esm
[Plugin 003] Name: ClimatesOfTamriel.esm
[Plugin 004] Name: Dawnguard.esm

[Plugin 017] Name: Immersive Horses.esp
[Plugin 018] Name: Immersive Horses - Hearthfire Patch.esp
[Plugin 019] Name: Immersive Horses - Vanilla.esp

Maybe I can ignore SkyUI, but the game crashes if I disable it and try to load a save that uses it, so I don't know. The weird thing is, if I disable any one of the other mods, Jenassa will appear in her normal leather armor. For instance, if I disable SMIM, a mod that doesn't change anything about NPCs or what they wear, but keep all the other eighteen plugins enabled, Jenassa will wear the leather armor as she should. As soon as I re-enable SMIM, and boot up the game, Jenassa will be wearing the studded imperial armor. It seems like having these mods enabled together is causing this, but I have no idea why or how to fix this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is driving me bonkers trying to figure out because it doesn't make any sense to me.

My suggestions:

  • Use LOOT to sort your load order. HighResTexturePack*.esp and Unofficial Skyrim Legendary Edition Patch.esp should be much higher than they are currently.
  • Since you have aMidianBorn Content Addon, you can disable aMidianborn_Skyforge_Weapons.esp, Differently Ebony.esp and AMB Glass Variants Lore.esp.
  • If you want to find out what is modifying Jenassa yourself, you can load up your entire load order in TES5Edit, find the NPC entry for Jenassa and scroll to the far right to see which ESP is modifying her (probably by changing her outfit).

Thank you so much! I had no idea TESEdit had that function. I managed to fix the problem. It was Cutting Room Floor that put Jenassa in leveled armor for some reason (that mod was on my suspect list, but I wasn't entirely sure) though for some reason the other mods were interfering with it.

I'd actually sorted with LOOT while waiting for an answer, cleaned my masters, and disabled the redundant plugins, though after sorting, disabling them didn't override the Cutting Room Floor changes, so I was still pretty confused.

Anyway, thank you for the tips! Now I can finally enter The Drunken Huntsman without having to deal with Jenassa's terrible imperial trooper cosplay.

I'm glad you fixed it.

After you mentioned that it was Cutting Room Floor, I looked it up on the mod page:

Version 2.0.4
All of the hirelings, except Marcurio, had personal outfit entries which were not being used. These have now been assigned. (Bug #21985)

And from Arthmoor in the posts section:

It's a restoration of a feature that was dormant. Hirelings had their own leveled lists for equipment that were not being used, so they're going to pull from those lists for their outfits, which will evolve over time as they level up.

So the reason for the change is that it's actual cut content.
