Skyline Lighting Troubles (Project Reality)

Recommended Posts

So... I've been playing New Vegas, as you do, and I had good ol' Project Reality Mk1v5 loaded, having a grand old time not being able to see at night. One night, I decided to hike up to the goodsprings cemetery to drink in some of that wonderful Las Vegas light pollution. And boy, did I get more than I bargained for, cuz' it sure looked like Mr. House was testing his new miniature sun.

Screen_Shot0.pngBest guess is that this wasn't supposed to happen. After loads of trial and error, I narrowed down the cause of the problem to Project Reality.

So, best option was to not use Project Reality, right? So I loaded up Realistic Wasteland Lighting, which may be smaller, but gives a nice desert feel. Only problem there was that when I waltzed up to have another look at that sweet New Vegas skyline, there was none. There was only the vague shadow of the Lucky 38 in the distance. Now, I don't know about you, but I'm a big fan of light pollution, and so it'd be greaaaat if anyone had a solution for either the Project Reality problem, or the Realistic Wasteland Lighting problem. I'd much prefer Realistic Wasteland Lighting, 'cuz it feels less clammy, but I'll take either one if a solution is available.

Have you tried switching between HDR and Bloom in the hardware configuration of the game with Project Reality? The tool "New Vegas Configator" lets you manipulate all the INI files at once if you want. (Install manually; not with a mod manager, and outside of the "C:\Program Files" folders.)

Are you using a "post-processor" such as ENB or SweetFX? If so, please see the 'Solutions to Post-Processor (ENB/SweetFX et. al.) problems' section the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" article.

Another possibility is if you are using a "weather" mod (i.e. "Realistic Wasteland Lighting") that is causing a storm to obscure the skyline at the moment. The New Vegas strip has it's own weather. Please see 'Issue: Fog effect around the Vegas Strip' in the "Troubleshooting" guide.

No post-processors are used, a separate help thread convinced me that was a bad plan. The "fog effect around the vegas strip" is definitely what I want to be changing here, but I'm not sure what it's asking me to do. It seems to be talking about editing code or something, is it talking about the ini file?

It would be an edit to a weather mod, changing the weather effect used in New Vegas. Alternatively, look for a different mod that already makes that change.

You might want to see if the mod "Dynavision 3" (which gives you much more direct control over lighting) won't help first.

Already installed and running, actually. By edit to the weather mod, would that be like trying to find some particular file?

I would load the weather mod in question into FNVEdit (along with it's masters), and then look at the weather records (under the "Climate" category) that it uses. I would expect you could then create a patch for that mod which uses the different weather from FalloutNV.ESM. Please see the wiki article "Compatibility Patching" for the basic process.
