So I have not been able to open my nexus mod manager for a few months now because it is being weird, but I just got Vortex and I am trying to migrate the mods, but the tutorial I looked at didn't work for me. I have multiple mods and I would prefer not to reinstall them if possible. I am playing Skyrim SE, and since I downloaded Vortex, I cannot play my game unless I play without my mods I have installed. If someone could walk me through step by step, that would be amazing.

It has been told several times by a lot of experienced users in this forum that if you are happy with your game using NMM, do not transfer the game to Vortex.

Why in Heaven's name people do not think wisely before thinking about importing a beloved game to Vortex ? Why don't you use a game that you do not care too much about, install it in NMM with a few mods ( 10-15 ) and then import that game to Vortex and see what happens and learn by mistakes that you do ?

Use that game as a RAT in the Vortex LAB to test everything so you learn Vortex before you decide to move your beloved game to Vortex. Every failure, every error is a valuable experience that should not frustrate anybody because they will teach you more than anything else.

By using that game that you do not care too much about in Vortex, you will learn a lot. It won't matter how many times you try, it won't matter how many errors you make, every single one of them is for you to know that you won't do it that way the next time so you will be learning using your "RAT GAME" in the Vortex LAB, which is the same principle used by scientist in real labs where they use real rats to test their vaccines, medications and stuff, and once is fully tested, is out for human consumption.

Do that and you will learn Vortex. Avoid it, and you will mess up with your beloved game.

Use your brain wisely and be smart !!

I can't open nexus and I cannot find a link to download nexus to reinstall it, therefore I want to use Vortex. I tinkered with the settings in Vortex a little bit, but I have no idea what I am doing. I will try messing around with it with a different game, but I would still like to keep my mods from skyrim. That is what I'm basically asking for is help.

Well, that is a problem if you cannot open NMM anymore and on that, I am unable to help you. Now that you are basically in a dead end and unable to go back to NMM, then go with Vortex but you are saying that you have no idea on what you are doing with Vortex, right ?

Have you read the instructions or you just are monkey around with it ?

I also understand that you want to keep your game intact but looks like it is already messed up and honestly, the only solution that I see is to start fresh again. I am sorry for saying that because I know that you do not want to do that but once is broken, I guess the best action is to start fresh.

I never imported my game from NMM to Vortex. I used Skyrim as a RAT in Vortex and once I felt confident about it, I decided to completely remove my Fallout4 game and NMM from my PC and I started fresh in Vortex. I have never trusted the import function so I cannot really advise anybody on how to handle it. Yes, as yourself, I also did not want to loose my mods but I also wanted to get rid of some and install others and do some updates to my mods so it was better to start fresh rather than importing something that I knew in advance it will be problematic.

So, at this point in your case, my recommendation is to start fresh. I would say to wipe out NMM from your PC and your two games. If it is necessary, wipe out also Vortex and reinstall it and then start to install your game from zero up.

The bad will be that you will loose ( as you said ) your game progress and mods but at this point I think they are lost anyway with all the mess that you said you have. The good will be that you will learn how to use Vortex and assuming that you do your homework, reading, investigate, watch videos, ask question and read this forum looking for answers to your questions, you will be fine.

And again, to avoid more frustration, use a game that you do not care too much about as a rat in Vortex and once you learn it and feel confident, install your beloved game and go from there. Believe me, Vortex is very easy but it does require form the user, some readings and as any other tool that you wanted to learn, it does has a learning curve.

Tips :

- Install Vortex where it choose it by default

- Create your mod folder in My Documents ( that is what I did )

- Setup Vortex properly ( have auto-deploy ON and in Settings --- Download, have Handled ON as well

- Once you start installing your mods, have Auto-Sort ON in the Plugins tab ( so all your plugins will be sorted automatically - same thing done by LOOT - turning the AUTO-SORT function to ON, is practically adding LOOT - without seeing it - to Vortex so you do not have to use LOOT anymore - forget about it - )

- Resolve your mod conflicts in the MOD tab ( make sure that you read how to do it )

- Play your game.

Yes it is easy as it was written above. Zero fuss and no hassles, but if you do not read or investigate and start monkey around without knowing, obviously you will get int trouble with anything out there in the planet. Try to manipulate a weapon without knowing exactly what to do, and you will kill somebody by mistake or you will shoot yourself in your foot.

We are here to help you but you need to do your homework as well.

Last but not the least. Forget about NMM and focus entirely on learning Vortex with an open mind and knowing that after some errors, you will learn it and once you do, you will be happy, I can assure you that !! Let us know.
