Help Riften: Fight corruption, destroy thieves guild and do something about the overall misery?

I have given my Skyrim a new, fresh start (I have yet to play a game where I get over level 25 >//>) with a new character and the most endorsed mods on Nexus. Now I have decided to really get immersed and let the NPC's talk, listen to their stories and such.

So I just came to Riften and everywhere I look there is misery: People live in fear of the Black-Briars and constant death threats by the thieves guild. On top of that a lot of people seem to be poor or have quite serious struggles.

Is it really possible that there is no quest-line to bring down the thieves guild or to help the town in general? Like .. every second character tells me that they have somewhat of a problem or that the town is miserable. This would be the first time I actually would feel good about being a Samaritan since the city seems to actually need some help. Not just minor inconveniences or someone asking me to play errand boy but actual troubles.

I have made a small research on the internet and so far it doesn't look very promising. Most people seem to say there is no real way to bring down the thieves guild and all I could find is this mod: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/28880

(It allows you to kill the people in the ratway but that's about it.. there is no real merit to the city apparently)

So maybe without spoilering everything can someone point me in the right direction in terms of quests, story-line? Or recommend a good mod?

I've always been surprised at how little there is in this regard. Plenty of mods let you kill Maven (which just ends up breaking a ton of quests), but few let you actually deal with her.

However there IS, "Thieves Guild for the Good Guys", which allows you to repurpose the guild somewhat to be a bit more Robin-hood like. The author seems to have only fully completed the SSE version, but the most recent LE version has most of the key parts, I believe. There are also some complimentary mods, like "Just say no to Nocturnal", which eliminates the requirement for you to become a Nightingale.

It's not ideal, and a mod to outright overthrow Maven (if she's Jarl) and replace her with say, Saerlund Law-Giver would be nice. It's something I've thought about and have discussed with other modders. It's not a difficult change, but the work involved would be pretty tedious.

Sometimes, in Skyrim, you have to place any "difference" you may have made in head Canon. You know what you've done, but the population barely acknowledges the Death of Alduin or the end of the Vampire prophecy menace.

I hear more thankfulness for "aged breton cheese" than for some of the major things I've done.

So, I know I've summarily executed all of the Thieves Guild (mod) and none of the crimes they would have incited will happen. I know I ended a major drug ring in Rifton. I know I ended Ulfric from imposing his Pax Stupidicus on the hold. I ended Maul. I ended Grelod. I've armed, trained and equipped both Mjoll and her lil boy Muffin to superior levels.

Mavis.. makes useless noise. Not much I can do there. Sibbi ended up mysteriously dead in his cell.

Former Jarl Law-Giver now lives at Honeyside under my supervision and my protection. Her penance is to patrol and protect the citizens, to assist me when needed, to learn what makes a leader, to realize her errors. She is a foil in Mavens face, is more popular, and an option for the undefined future when Maven finally oversteps.

I'm certain I've made Rifton a better place.

Its all head canon, but it works for me. I do what I can with RDO and tesVedit. Shrug.

I have a similar solution. I also use "Draw! a dueling mod" to challenge individual thieves guild members who threaten or try to strong arm me and kill them.. "Skyrim Reputation" is also a good one to add so you can feel more appreciated ( or reviled if you're an evil person)

In the game, inside of the Palace of Riften there is a book on its history.

Like Winterhold, Riften was once much larger, but fires and other devastation had destroyed many of the wooden structures; which were never rebuilt.

Why on earth would you want to destroy one of best factions that is tied to Nocturnal?

The Thieves Guild is actually one that is honorable. And the rewards are well worth the effort.

And honestly, if you get rid of the Thieves Guild, you must also remove Nocturnal, the Daedra of Shadow; and honestly, I love the Nightingale perks in Skyrim.
