Downloaded mods duplicated 3 times.

Just a little feedback for you devs.

It seems Vortex is making 3 copies of a downloaded mod. So that's 4 copies of a mod.

I manually download mods and then drag them into vortex.

I didn't know this (my fault), but vortex then makes an unnecessary copy of that file over to the C drive.

After a while of doing this - my Skyrim kept crashing. I went through further hours of restarting and re-reading mod load order rules, cleaning etc etc only to find my C drive was down to 100mb of free space!! There was my crash.

Found the files and removed them.

If there is a technical valid reason for the duplication process to take place -that's fine, but i would recommend that once the file has been installed, it should remove the download from the C drive.

You have the downloaded mod file - you install in vortex then a copy of that mod goes into the Skyrim Mods folder for vortex - then a copy of that in the game folder and now it seems a copy of that onto the c drive.

It just seems a bit unnecessary. I haven't touched vortex since the weekend - but it didn't ask me to update so i believe i have the latest version.

So in short, i think there needs to be a way that vortex knows you've dragged the file into it and doesnt copy that to the downloads folder. I've just noticed an update last night. I'll have a look this weekend and see if its fixed this? Its no biggy i suppose because now i am aware of it and can remove the contents of the download folder.

There are not 4 copies. Just two (the archive and the installed version).

If you import a file into Vortex manually, you create a copy, true. But that's your own doing. You can delete the original, if you want. If Vortex would delete the original by itself, then I would agree that this would be more than questionable.

I'm pretty sure there is 4 if you count the downloaded file, vortex's own mod folder and of course the game folder. If you add in the download folder too, thats 4.

Its no drama really and its my fault for not having RTFM. That being said, as I say, I get the downloads folder for when you download a file using vortex (needs to go somewhere right?) but if you arent downloading the file using vortex it shouldnt be needed.

But meh - out of all the issues im sure there are - this is really low and of course isnt a bug as such.

thanks for the reply.

Not sure I understood you right - You're counting the archive (.7z or something) and the extracted mod as copies?

Then no, Vortex doesn't create 4 copies and it doesn't create unnecessary copies.

The files in the game folder are not copies, they are links, they don't take up additional space on your disk.

And you drag a file to Vortex and it creates a copy, that's how it works, it's the intended behavior. For every user like you who wants the original removed there is another user who would rant about how Vortex deleted the original file when he just wanted it copied.

As you drag the file over the the dropzone it even says "Copy".

So we have one manual copy - one extracted archive - which is required - and one set of links - which is also required.
