Vortex Confusion

Recommended Posts

So I have not been to the Nexus site in months. Not since I had to re-download all the mads after switching from Windows 7 to 10. Now I see Vortex has replaced the Nexus Mod Manager. I am very hesitant to download and install it.

And I have questions about it.

Like:

1. What is Vortex exactly?

2. Can I replace Nexus Mod Manager without loosing all the mod data?

3. Why would I want to change to Vortex?

In the short search I did, I found no answers.

And this black background is causing lots of eye strain.

You don't really have to switch over to Vortex, but you may need to update NMM, depending on how long "in months" is. Click on the download Vortex button, and scroll down all the way to find the Github link.

Back up your data before you do anything. That, or test Vortex on a fresh install of a game. Either way works, but result is the same: if any problems occur, you are not out of much.

In my experience, Vortex has been immensely helpful in regards to how it handles mods. Auto sorting ESP files and a more thorough and informative conflict system that warns of conflicts and allows you to manually dictate how to handle them being highlights I think. My Fallout 4 has been far more stable than it has been in recent playthroughs, and I for the first time since buying it years ago, was actually able to play Vegas for hours on end without crashing thanks to Vortex. 3-4 crashes in 15-20 hours or so.

If you want to learn more, I implore you to start here: https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/7060326-vortex-help-center-faq-documentation/ That, and the forums here. There are many helpful posts about how to go about installing and using Vortex... and a lot of examples of how not to handle bug reports, asking for help, or criticism.

Well in terms of months it would have been about the end of last September. At this point I can't do anything about it until next week. But for the time being I will stick with Nexus Mod Manager. I don't have the time to try and get a new program running. Not when I'm working close to full time. I will try and learn more in the mean time.

1 - You need to read what Vortex is exactly in the Vortex Feedback forum and you will find on the top, Question and Answers about Vortex. If you already downloaded it, you will see a Knowledge Base and there you can read everything about it.

2 - I do not recommend to just import all of your mods without reading and learn Vortex. I would suggest to either : download a game in NMM that you do not care about with only 10-15 mods and import it to Vortex so you can test it and once you feel comfortable, you can import your favorite game … or just install a game that you do not care too much about in Vortex with only 10-15 mods and monkey around. Once you know it, transfer your favorite game.

3 - That is a decision that you need to make yourself. After I used NMM for 2 years, I started to use Vortex since it was out and I do not regret. NMM is gone for ever for me. That is the only thing I can say but ultimately, it is your decision.

Background in Vortex can be changed to less dark. Go to Settings --- Theme but read the Knowledge Base and you will find how to change it in that section.

I will have to do that next Tuesday then. Game wise I only ever really used Nexus Mod Manager to mod: Fallout 3 & 4 and Skyrim. Only other game mods I ran was with the Oblivion manager.

Other than that it would be Thrawn's Revenge and that sort of works at the moment. So really I have no games that I don't care about.

I did manage to change the forum background to white. Now it doesn't hurt my eyes as much.
