I just installed FNIS, then ran the generator after setting up the tool in the dashboard, and it seemed ok. Then set it to run on every deployment. Then installed the creature pack, and it tells mod files were changed outside Vortex and asks to revert or save.

Is this normal? Seems very non-intuitive if so.

Should I revert or save? If I revert, then it seems FNIS isn't allowed to do what it need to. If I save, then it seems Vortex loses control and can't do what it needs to.

Turn off the RUN on Every Deployment
I use FNIS and I don't have that turned on.

Always save

Same for Bodyslide. Applications whose job is to create new data - always Save.

So it's normal for some applications to create data outside of Vortex?

If you choose save, does that mean you lose the ability to go back to your previous configuration?

IOW, say I install some animation mod, and FNIS gives me the revert or save question, and I click save, then decide I do NOT like the animation, can I easily go back to the way things were before?

Yes it's normal

AN example is UIO (Universal Interface Organizer) for Fallout New Vegas, it writes XML files whenever you start the game to make sure that several Interface Mods work together.

Just pick SAVE, I picked Revert once and I had to reinstall everything I was working on because it reverted everything to what it was before I had made any changes.

Yes, just reinstall the animation file.

Also TURN OFF "Run FNIS at every Deployment"

As I said, I ran FNIS ONCE, when I was finished installing everything, and I haven't had to run it since then.

Ok thanks, good to know. Should be some kind of tip or message on Vortex itself. Easy to screw this one up IMHO.

I get the same error, Revert or save changes, once I do, Vortex adds ".vortex_Ink" after each file, and then I get the Failed to run FNIS error. Installing through Vortex gives me the same error

No, what is the actual path to FNIS, the path in the Skyrim game folder

It should show on your Dashboard in Vortex, the path should be something like

TARGET - D:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\Data\tools\GenerateFNIS_for_Users\GenerateFNISForUsers.exe

START IN - D:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\Data\tools\GenerateFNIS_for_Users\
