SKSE Dysentary?

You know, I knew the first time I'd post on these forums would be to cry about my modding incompetence.

So, here's the issue: I'm a fledgling modder, and so I've only just begun editing my game. I downloaded the most recent version of SKSE, had a bit of trouble at first, but figured it out on my own. It worked fine until today, to which now the game has, for all intents and purposes, shat itself. At times it wouldn't start, others it worked with limited options, and now my saves are corrupted. I've had some minor problems before, and fixed them by reinstalling Skyrim SE and SKSE. When I went to start my game today, I noticed it had turned off SkyUI and Racemenu, and crashed multiple times when loading my save after I turned them back on. So, I turned them off in vortex to see if they really were the issue, and upon start up it said my saves were corrupted, and then crashed. To reference, I have been playing the game by opening it via the skse64_loader. When my game began to act up, I ran it as administrator, and had no dice. Then I tried starting a new game through steam to see if it was affected, and it worked, but without some of my mods running. Racemenu seems to only have the basic options you'd find in vanilla character creation, and loading my presets made them look like they came straight out of The Goonies. This was still the case when I started a new game with the skse64_loader. It was at this point I went back to the main menu to see if any mods were turned off, and natural realistic lighting was. So, I turned it on, and the game crashed upon start up. It would seem that would be my culprit, but it still doesn't explain why racemenu now won't run with all of the features it had before, or why my saves are corrupted (to me, at least).

To add, the game worked smoothly yesterday. I haven't modified it since then, I have the latest version of SKSE, and I keep the files in my Skyrim special edition folder. I also regularly reorder them through LOOT.

TL;DR:
Racemenu is only showing vanilla character creation options
Corrupted saves
Game crashes

Thanks for checkin' in.

It's "Intents and Purposes"

OK, first off, let's start with SKSE64 and the installation of SKSE64, you said Skyrim SE, but keep saying SKSE, just to verify, are you trying to use SKSE with Skyrim SE, or are you correctly using SKSE64 with Skyrim SE?

You should be using SKSE64 with Skyrim SE.

Is it installed correctly (From the installation instructions included with SKSE64 inside the 7z file

(The reason I'm asking is because of the corrupted saves)

[ Installation ]
1. Copy the .dll and .exe files to your Skyrim SE directory. This is usually in your Program Files folder under Steam\SteamApps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\. If you see files named SkyrimSE and SkyrimSELauncher, this is the correct folder. Do not copy these files to the Data folder as with a normal mod. The "src" folder is only useful for programmers, most users can ignore it.
2. Copy the .pex files in Data\Scripts\ into the Data\Scripts\ folder of your installation. The .pex files are needed by all users of SKSE.

Whoops, at least I know for the future, haha.

and it is SKSE64, sorry, shortened it in my head.

After checking it, yes, it is installed in the correct place and all of the .pex files are in the Data\ Scripts\ folder.

OK

So, you have your mod staging folder (set in vortex) to the same drive you have your games installed on, (but not INSIDE the GAME folder) and when asked for the option of Deployment, you picked HARDLINK?

Actually, checking it now, it seems the folder is set to my downloads rather than the drive I have my games installed on, though it is set to hardlink deployment. I'm guessing that is my issue?

Nope, there's two different folders, the Mods Download Folder, and the Mod Staging Folder.

Sounds like the Mod Staging folder is correct because you have the HARDLINKS option.

Now, do you have Vortex set up to automatically run SKSE64 when you start Skyrim SE from Vortex?

(Your paths will be different)

(Hope this isn't too much info at once)

When you pick ADD TOOL from the Dahsboard, you click on the folder at the far right in the TARGET box, and browse to SKSE64 (path will be different, and START IN will automatically fill in)

Vortex-SKSE-Tool.jpg

Once you have SKSE64 in your Dashboard, you click on the three little vertical dots and pick "MAKE PRIMARY"

Once you've made SKSE64 "Primary" it will have a little Banner showing in it's box in the Dashboard

After that, whenever you start Skyrim SE from Vortex it will automatically run SKSE64 FIRST, automatically.

Alright, I set it up! Thanks for all the helpful visuals!

All seems relatively well, except that the issues with Racemenu seems to persist. When I start the game and go to mods, Sky UI and Racemenu are automatically disabled, along with natural real lighting. Upon starting the game after turning them on, while sky UI and race menu seem to be working, race menu is missing most of its features (such as expressions, as well as many of the sliders for the eyes and head sections, for example) Is this something related to SKSE64? Or rather an issue with the individual mod?

Ah...OK, the problem with Racemenu 'missing features' could possibly be that you don't have the required mods that enable those features in Racemenu.

Racemenu on its own is able to edit certain things, but if you want to edit EVERYTHING, you have to install a lot of other mods.

I know that I can never edit 'Expressions' because I never install the requirements to edit expressions.

Racemenu 'adapts' to what you have installed that uses Racemenu.

I went through my Vortex and noticed the plugins were turned off, so I turned them on and now it's all fixed! Thanks so much for your help!

Excellent, here's another tip that might make things a bit easier

With that switch turned on, when you install and Enable a Mod, it will automatically DEPLOY, so it stops being a Two-Step process.
