[1]1.1[1]

Radhumans, and hulking radmans, held the settlement ringwall against charging radghoulers smart enough to use basic armour-arms clearly beyond their ability to make. It was all regular enough to have been provided by another faction, most likely a criminal trader of some kind using the radghoulers as providers of exotic resources.

The settlement had recently joined the DCSL (District of Columbia Settlements League) and there were DCGuardsmen there fighting bravely with only midtech, and lotech, gear though their midtech was of better quality than that of the locals.

The noise of battle, the shooting of precious ammunition, the use of lotech such as bows and spears, the howling screams of the radghoulers, was too damned typical of such fighting. Radghouler dead piled up but with every wave they got closer to the ringwall. Some kind of dark psychic force was driving them on in a way that was disturbing even for radghoulers.

Of the 13Way13 as temporary 'mortal-immortals' with special abilities, JackOman was an UCSeekfinders (United Citystates Seekfinders) come from Central North America whose shooting abilities were now making a real difference to the fight. With seeming casualness he shot his very big revolver pistol with one hand and his just as big semiautopistol with his other. Every shot dropped a radghouler with merciful quickness.

The United Citystates of PanAmerica was deep down underground in a network of transtunnel linked deepbunkers and deepkeeps (settlements) along with other facilities. The PanAmericans were eager to meet, negotiate, form alliances with and trade with others but not all others. So ran the story that was both true and false.

JackOman's comrade, JillOman, had gone looking for what the radghoulers were being used to decoy from. In a tough grey quasileather outfit like all the 13 UCSeekfinders wore, she led JaseOman and JaziOman through an old smugglers' tunnel beneath the settlement of Darkcorner. They were drawn to what ever it was that the real enemy wanted.

[1]1.2[1]

The tunnel was full of stale air and bits of junk, semijunk, abandoned by smugglers. None had gone down there for over two decades and the reasons given, with reluctance plus generous bribery, was that smugglers had begun to vanish mysteriously. Even large, well armoured-armed groups had done so. The tunnels, and chambers linked to them, were thus sealed up. It was good that they had been well made, and previously maintained, for they were still safe to use.

With enhanced physical, and ESP (extra sensory perception) they sensed the ambominations before they appeared. Then the shamblers, zombies, came out of a tunnel entrance wearing remnants of clothing over greasy, glistening, leathery like skin pockmarked with areas of unnatural rot. This might have caused a few people to flee but the three had dealt with the livingdead before and much worse kinds, of them, than zombies.

JillOman shot both, one shot each, neatly in the head and they dropped to start crumbling away with unnatural speed as the laws of nature caught up with them. Despite wide spread beliefs otherwise, zombies had very vulnerable points in the head and the upper torso both. They could be killed quickly by slicing off the head but, then again, what wouldn't be? Yet heavy enough firepower could do the trick anyway.

They entered the chamber and found unsprising unpleasantness. Dead bodies largely devoured, untidy heaps of loot, carefully stored smugglers' goods in containers and then the odd items. A half stripped mechanism of a fusion minigenerator, a big Browning Heavy Machinegun of a weapon carefully prepared for storage, a small basic remoterobot normally guided by external computers or people and the chiller.

JillOman studied the zerotech device that was most likely linked to the creation of the zombies. There might not be any more zombies as they might easily have turned upon each other thanks to the 'hungering' but no chances were going to be taken.

Some fools had been playing around with 'greytech' of the greyliens (grey aliens) that only such criminally insane creatures would use. Zerotech was hybrid of humantech, greytech and sometimes other tech such as alien zetantech. Back in 1977AD Warday had seen the nuclear destruction of many parts of the world but biological, chemical and other superweapons had also been used. Now, just over 200 years later, there were elite factions that knew that more than the superweapons had caused the Warworld as it had become known.

Together they reached out, with their special abilities, and the zerotech mechanism vanised with a sparkling shimmer.

JillOman telepathed to the others. "We could easily assume that this is what the attack is really about but that was only a ClassC device and I doubt it would be the worth the resources expense of supporting a large radghouler attack or utilising powerful psychic control to push them abnormally aggressive even for their kind."

JaziOman, another woman, responded in the same manner. "Well, there is that other door there hidden behind the large cubecontainer."

The TeamOman abilities were very handy at times though far from over powered.

They moved the container, with little difficulty though it was heavy, and revealed a narrower but just as high tunnel. Along that they paced as quietly as possible and as quickly because even they did not want to deal with zombies in such a confined space. Zombies were slower than radghouls, or radghoulers, but were a lot stronger and harder to damage.

They stared in surprise at what they found in that chamber being a large zerotech mechanism that had to be studied to be more fully understood and for its true nature to be discovered; in other words just what kind of 'hybridisation' had gone into its making and what was its purpose.

They psykersensed the fighting, in another part of the tunnels, for it was as much psychic as it was physical. A vampire, of the livingdead, was struggling to survive against a shadowy entity far more powerful than it, which was saying a good deal for vampires were both lethal and very uncommon.

The rest of the TeamOman were in the BaseOman that was both there and yet not there. There were nine of them working on projects, training, doing [email protected] or meeting personal needs. A report was sent to the BaseOman warning them that an aspect of the OsoThreat had shown up in the settlement which was more of a surprise than was the finding of zerotech. JessiOman, JuneOman and JamesOman materialised all prepped for trouble. Then those three set out one way while the original three went another though both in the same general direction.

Before that they clamped four special devices to the large zerotech mechanism and 'sent' it to BaseOman.

By the time they got to the dead vampire, it was a desiccated corpse drained of blood, water and liquefied flesh. In the chamber it was in there was a whole lot of heaped up stuff and signs that there had been another big, zerotech, mechanism there but it had been taken. Even as the radghoulers turned, and fled away, the TeamOman knew that they had failed to fulfil their mission in a successful fashion; they were both annoyed that their almost perfect record had been tarnished but mostly they were concerned at the ramifications of what had happened.

[1]1.4[4]

There were no more livingdead beneath Darkcorner as the intruding OsoThreat had destroyed the vampire, three zombies and five living thralls that the vampire had been carefully harvesting fresh blood from. While the settlers were told that there had been livingdead existing below them, they were not given all information. That was because of the hidden away stash of journals, odd artefacts and other items indicating some kind of links to a conspiracy; that is just one of too many conspiracies that had been taking place before, and even after, Warday.

JackOman watched as the radghouler corpses were looted, the dying having been mercy killed, and then put into a special organic processer tuned to radflesh. Before that samples were taken along with measurements and other data to be used by research, administration and other groups. He had gained samples, and copies of data, from the five specialists there doing the work being of the StudiousOrder of the Orderhood of Orders.

Sheriff Ben Kelly came to him, grim and filthy from the fight. The man stopped and studied JackOman carefully before speaking. "Removing items from a crime scene is a criminal act in its own right."

JackOman responded dryly. "We took only a relatively small amount of items that are nothing of concern to the settlers of Darkcorner or the citizens of the DCLR. They are dangerous, either directly or indirectly. You sent down people though we requested that you do not do so until three of my comrades had finished searching the smuggler network down there. Fortunately they got to everything 'sensitive' before your deputy sherrif and sheriff deputies did."

The sheriff scowled. "Why do you all have the same kind of name?"

JackOman became harder, looked into Ben Kelly's eyes and the mortal stepped back involuntarily. "You are being very rude, sheriff, and I am starting to wonder why that is so."

The woman scholar stepped up, in the robetunic of a SisterStudious, and spoke in the same language of Simplang, a common one across much of the Warworld and not just the Wastelands. Simplang stood for 'simple language' and was a survival language easily learned and taught being artificially created Prewarday by the supergenius Hugh Vance Brown. It was he who invented the smoothbore pipegun system, buildfoam and even the combat kitchen knife along with many others.

She spoke. "The sheriff has just lost two of his people to the radghoulers. Please forgive him his temper. Ben has overlooked the fact that in the smugglers' network his people found useful resources and, if improved, the network itself could be a useful resource."

JackOman detected the subtle finger signal given by the woman but did not need her warning when he could see the faded tattoo, of a vampire familiar on the sheriff's forehead that most could not. He psychsensed that the woman was far from being a threat and wondered if she was more than a SisterStudious. As for the man he was starting to sweat profusely and for good reason as familiars gained strength, and weak exotic abilities, from their vampire masters but also came to be dependent on it. He was weakened but it was hard to feel sorry for the man when he had willing come to serve a vampire for to become a familiar one had to be willing or one was a helpless thrall.

JackOman spoke to the man. "How long were a familiar before a darkside entity, much more powerful than it, destroyed it? How many victims did you help kill?

The man scowled. "None! I was a smuggler and a crooked cop of a Deputy Sheriff when the vampire began to make vanish smugglers as it fed on them. Yet there was another type of livingdead there that it concealed the identity of even from its familiars and vampiric followers. I was cornered by the vampire and given a choice of becoming a familiar or being fed upon to death. The others, that I was with, chose death but stupidly I chose to be a familiar. The vampire never touched any locals, after it took control of the underground smugglers' network but went out into the Wastelands so as not to attract unwanted attention from any Darkcorner folk. I am dying! Even though I am a radhuman I got cancer but I am not sure how, or where, this happened."

JackOman shook his head. "Not cancer proper but contagicancer (contagious cancer) caused by gendrift, FEV, high radiation and other combined factors. Being a vampiric familiar would have slowed it, even halted it, but would never have cured it. Now the contagicancer will race through you the faster as if a dam broke suddenly to release all the built up effects. This is your lucky moment because you have gained a second chance so don't waste it."

Sheriff Ben Kelly vanished away with a soft sparkling shimmer.

[1]1.6[6]

The SisterStudious had a look of mild surprise as if she had seen remarkable incidents before. "I am SisterStudious Samanda O'Brien of the Secondary Circle of the OrderStudious. While I have witnessed, close up, teleportation and other such phenomena I had the feeling that what happened there was not the same at all. What did you do?"

JackOman sighed. "I nominated the man to a 'higher authority' and that I all that I can say for the moment."

The radhuman woman looked thoughtful. "Do you serve the Celestitricouncil, that serves the Celestitricircle, as the Orderhood does with its many Orders?"

He nodded. "We TeamOman serve the Celestitricircle but not the Celestitricouncil though we have worked with them in the past. You need be careful to whom you speak of such matters. Why are you here, in this isolated DCSL (District of Columbia Settlements League) settlement being at the very northern edge of DC?"

Samanda frowned softly. "We are here as part of a larger Orderhood expeditionary group camped but a few kilometres from here at the semiruins of Fort Brave. We have been given a multiple goal mission of checking on a number of whisper stories, and more reliable reports, from this area but also just to generally gather information. There are five FollowersProtective at the edge of Darkcorner ready to come to our assistance if they have to do so. we did gain reports of vampiric activity in the area but there seemed to be no links to Darkcorner.  What do you think he meant by another kind of livingdead?"

JackOman shrugged. "Have no definite idea. We were sent here for the same reasons you were, generally speaking, but we were led straight to Darkcorner by information that we were given. The people, of this sorry town, will not quite remember the sheriff; 18 others were secondarily nominated, a kind of collateral effect from making a nomination. That is eight radhumans, three dogs, three cats, a parrot, a scrapbot robot, a claptrap robot and two mutahumans along with some plants, goods and others that I can not speak of here-now. I offer fair trade along with some assistance if you need it."

She gave a shallow bow, hands before her with palms pressed against each other. "We are always in need of assistance for we are always spending many resources on fulfilling our charter."

The two of them soon parted ways. JackOman went back down to the smugglers' network for  three other TeamOman members were still there and they had found a surprise discovery when they had been ready to cease exploring-examining and to declare the network to be at least safe from the livingdead. JackOman walked down a tunnel and then vanished as he teleported deeper to where the three others waited.

[1]1.7[7]

JaziOman telepathed even as she studied the infant's high chair, badly damaged toys and some other items suggesting that a baby, of some kind, had been there. "A born vampire, very rare, with rare type powers so the vampire protecting it may have been its mother or father."

JackOman shook his head. "We found journals, written by that vampire in what it assumed was unbreakable code; after easily breaking it, I learned that it was a typical null vampire incapable of giving birth though it was a vampire woman by shape. There was no mention of a vampiric baby in any of the journals except for some hidden notes, inside two leather book covers, that indirectly mentioned 'blood in milk' supplies, nappies, hardened teething devices and a few other items such a baby might find."

It was clear that some items had been taken being most likely containers, backpacks and such like.

JackOman spoke again. "Ben Kelly spoke of there being 'vampiric followers' in the network but that would not, could not, mean thralls or zombies. Surely he would have referred to a less powerful vampire or even at least one semivampire. What ever the truth, the lesser vampires or part vampires could have fled with the baby, taking it to some place safer."

While live born vampires were known, they were rare except on-in a handful of extreme worlds that the Celestitricircle had under heavy security health quarantine. The implications, of what they had discovered, were disturbing. They began to search the large cave chamber with its lights flickering dull as a battery pack went slowly flat. They found evidence of a few isolated, very small, footprints and fingerprints of odd nature. Then they picked up traces of blood mingled with milk.

The four of them continued to search the underground area but only found one more abandoned smugglers' trove and a chamber full of desiccated corpses that had clearly been fed upon. Their gear was neatly stacked to one side except for a few, likely, looted items.

The Development of Tech through the Great War, to Warday, and beyond

11/11/1911AD to 11/11/2011AD: the Great War as fought between the Capitalist Alliance, the Fascist Axis and the Soviet Pact along with lesser powers, exotic Terran factions, offworlders and outworlders. The intensification of wartime research development, the capture of alien UFOs, the discovery of ancient exotic sites and other influences led to a huge advancement in science and technologies; this led to great privileges for some but most were either poor or of the middle classes. The war was not straight forwardly fought for a wide range of reasons.

By the last decade, before Warday in 1977AD, there were fusion battery powered transports,  fusion reactor power stations, robots, power armor, gravirotor vertibirds, replicators, NukaCola, rejuvenation treatments, AIsupercomputers, fusion rocketships,  mecha, monorail trains, SSVR (simulation stimulation virtual reality), cable teleportation, railguns, laserguns and much else. Such was hitech to supertech.

Yet far more common were coal compression power stations, electric runabouts, diesel electric trains, basic remoterobots, non AI computers, solid fuel rockets, bicycles, horse drawn carts, basic medicines, double rail trains, helicopters, jet aeroplanes and much out of lotech to midtech nature.

Science tech research development continued, mostly in secret or even in deep secret, after Warday but mostly degeneration of knowledge, skills and others resources took place. People were generally lucky to get hold of midtech, lotech became the norm along with some exotic techs while only a minority were able to access hitech let alone supertech.

[1]2.1[8]

Four TeamOman members, and the Orderhood people, traveled carefully through the Wastelands on foot though the Orderhooders had an aging packmule with them called Grampgrumps. Normally taciturn with all, and nippy at times, he fell in love with the TeamOmans at once, especially with JaziOman. She led him and he followed as he looked at her with adorable devotion.

Wastelands classification for the area was C, A being best and D+ getting very bad. They passed through the long crumbled away remains of a commons town that had not had the expensive self repairing smart materials of more elite Prewarday settlements with their domes or even bubbles. Then they were going through an area of softly glowing glowshooms, showing up with the appearance of dark cloud caused gloom. Stunted, mutated trees survived with, in some cases, tart wrinkled fruits that the group picked a small amount of for their own use along with a clump of glowshooms.

Radcreatures, mostly smaller radcritters, were fairly common as were thick meatworms sometimes poking up their heads from the dark red brown earth. Then they were passing a large battletank with its twin autocannon barrels, wheels but no tracks and hover enabling fanjets. Rust grew over parts of it and a large hole was in its side. It had most likely been destroyed during the Soviet Invasion of the US East Coast but there were other possibilities. Prewarday history, of the 1960sAD and 1970sAD, were somehow more mysterious than were earlier historical periods such as earlier on during the Great War and even before that.

JackOman crouched at one point on the well worn dirt road that they had been following. "Lots of radghoulers came this way. They were moving away from (the settlement of) Darkcorner and likely towards Fort Brave where your comrades are."

Samanda naturally showed concern. "Then I suggest that we go faster."

JackOman shook his head. "Not in the Wastelands proper. This area is known for its giant radscorpions and they can come up quick from beneath the ground, as you probably know."

The woman frowned. "I have been in safer areas, most of my life, and coming out here has been a sharp learning curve. Dangerous but useful education is how a few of my people have put it. We must be quite close to Fort Brave by now."

JackOman nodded. "Not far at all."

Which was when the TeamOmans began to hear muffled shooting with their enhanced hearing abilities.
