FO4 can't find F4SE when launching from Vortex

My new PC is homebuilt running:

Windows 10 Home x64 version 1803

16GB of RAM

AMD Ryzen 3X processor

ASUSTek ROG motherboard

3GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card

Primary disk is a Samsung SSD 500 GB

Secondary disk is Seagate 1 TB Hard drive

Fallout 4 was recently added to my game collection that includes Skyrim (Oldrim and SE). I have been using Vortex to manage Skyrim SE mods for a while now and like it. After updating to Vortex version 0.17.3, I noticed it is now able to manage my Fallout 4 mods. Vortex and FO4 reside on different drive partitions on my PC, so this was not possible before.

Because I want to set up game profiles so I can have different mod lists for different character playthroughs, this week I moved 200+ FO4 mods over to Vortex from Wrye Bash.

Everything looks OK but when I launch the game through Vortex I get an error message in game saying that F4SE was not found and one of my mods (Transfer Settlements) will not function properly as a result. Rebooting my PC does not help. However, launching the game from the FO4 install directory as administrator does. I have the f4se_loader set up correctly in my Vortex tools panel and it is set to be primary. So I don't understand why F4SE ends up missing in action.

I thought I should bring this to your attention just in case Vortex is involved.

Hopefully this post is specific enough without being longwinded. Any insight you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Now I am getting the infinite load screen glitch when I try to launch through Vortex. I installed F4SE manually, but like you I am going to also install it like a mod. Did that with ENB for Skyrim.

EDIT 2: I misunderstood the requirement. Thanks for clarifying it for me.

You qualify as a long time user of Vortex at this point.

You should know there has never been a requirement to have your game on the same drive as Vortex.

The only requirement is that your game and it's mods be on the same drive. That is a Windows requirement for hard links.

The message you are getting about F4SE indicates that the F$SE scripts are not in the Data/Scripts directory. If you were actually missing F4SE - the game would not start.

I can't tell if you install F4SE as a mod in addition to copying the dlls and exe. I do it that way because it keeps track of the scripts for me.

I think Fore has a different opinion...

I installed F4SE as a mod through Vortex. Now I get the infinite loading screen glitch when launching from my Vortex dashboard. So I tried launching as administrator from the f4se_loader and received this error:

Unsupported game version: 1.10.120.0

Expected: 1.10.114.0

WmkActiveEffects will be disabled

I have seen this before and it is usually related to a mod that was compiled (?) to the earlier version of the game engine. AFT used to do that for me if it wasn't the last mod in my load order. The author said it was irrelevant as long as his mod was loaded last.

Do you have any suggestions as to how I can find which mod in my load order is the culprit? I have AFT in my load order, but it is disabled in the profile I have set as active.

EDIT: Still will not launch from within Vortex, but no problem right-clicking and running f4se_loader as administrator.

You actually have to do F4SE in two pieces. Vortex does not install applications in the game directory.

You have to copy the Dlls and exe manually.

Your choice on how you do the scripts - you can copy them manually, or go the mod route.

If you go ONLY the mod route - you have the wrong version of F4SE in the game directory.

The current version of F4SE only supports 1.10.120.0. If you do it right - you won't get the message you got.

As always, refer to https://f4se.silverlock.org and follow the instructions carefully.

Good luck! Come back if this does not get you going.

Don't run Vortex as an Administrator, and in turn, don't have Vortex run other things that are set to run as Administrator because you'll run into "Elevation" errors

IE, Running Vortex as a normal User, while having it run F4SE as an Admin, will probably cause the hanging screen because F4SE is "elevated" to Admin level, but Vortex isn't

So set your F4SE to run normally (non admin), and see if Vortex (also run as non admin) will run it without hanging

Actually Vortex can install to games root folder, as long as you don't uses USVFS for deployment-method.

In Vortex click Knowledge Base followed by Tools Setup: Script Extenders for instructions.

Thanks everyone.

Originally I installed the latest version of F4SE (the one recommended for game version 1.10.120.0) the old-fashioned way: manually, by copying the files into the correct directories. I am familiar with how to do this from Oblivion and Skyrim mod use experience.

Last night I installed the same version of F4SE (0.6.15) through Vortex as a mod like rmm200 does (see above) hoping that it would resolve any potential problem with missing scripts (although I am reasonably sure I installed them the old-fashioned way as well). Today I will go back and re-install all F4SE items the old-fashioned way to make sure I have the right versions in the right places. Before doing anything else, I will also check the knowledge base to make sure I installed F4SE as a mod correctly.

FO4 has actually run for many hours on my PC without resorting to launching it as an administrator directly or by elevating Vortex. The current problems occurred after I revamped my installed mods and created new profiles in Vortex. First, I could not get the game to launch at all (beyond the garage video) running as a normal user.

When I launched the game via f4se_loader as administrator (right-click) it launched successfully. I started a playthrough, saved, then exited the game properly. After re-launching the game through Vortex, I selected 'Continue' from the game menu after the garage video and the game launched but threw the 'F4SE could not be found' error. If I exit the game (properly), and right-click relaunch it via f4se_loader as administrator (outside Vortex) the game launches without the F4SE error and is fully playable.

The game version error comes up when I run f4se_loader again as administrator. Sorry if I was not clear about this earlier. Later today I am going to try running f4se_loader as a normal user and see what happens. At this point I can't remember the result last time I tried it.

By the way, right-clicking a shortcut to f4se_loader and running it as administrator does not work. I get the same result as when I launch it through Vortex (F4SE is missing).

The last time I ran Vortex as administrator was in its alpha days and I stopped doing that when the guidance came out that we should not. This is the first time I have had a problem related to Vortex at all since it went beta.

You are helping me better understand these problems and I greatly appreciate your efforts.

It's worth checking to see if your STEAM shortcut or EXE is set to run as an admin, if it is, uncheck the box.
Someone else had that problem with Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Obviously your paths and Script Extender are going to be different, but this is what you get after you use ADD TOOL, in the Dashboard

Your Paths should be something like

TARGET - Drive:\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 4\f4se_loader.exe

START IN - Drive:\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 4\

Vortex-SKSE-Tool.jpg

Also be sure to have F4SE set to PRIMARY in the dashboard so it has the little banner, so it will automatically run when you start Fallout 4 with Vortex

HadToRegister, I checked the paths in Vortex and they did not resemble what you showed above. My game is in a Steam Library residing on a different drive, but the paths should be similar. They were not, so I corrected them to better match your example. I can now launch FO4 within Vortex but it still can't find F4SE.

It appears that when I installed F4SE as a mod, I did it incorrectly and it installed F4SE in Data rather than the root (install) folder. I have disabled that mod for now, but will wait to remove until the game is launching through Vortex and correctly finding F4SE.

I will check the Steam client properties next. There was a time when I had it set to run as administrator but I thought I changed it back. Steam has been giving me an error message when launching the first time saying something about not running it in compatibility mode. This I am sure has been corrected, but the message still comes up the first time I try to launch a Steam game. More to follow.

Remember the different types of errors:

1) Game will not launch. F4SE not found. Your path to the F4SE launcher in the root directory is bad - or your F4SE install is bad.

2) Game launches but you get complaints about F4SE missing / wrong version. Your F4SE scripts in data/scripts are missing or wrong version, or your F4SE executable is wrong version.
