Tamriel Rebuilt crashes in Old Ebonheart (OpenMW)

Hey,

so after a lot of struggle I got Tamriel Rebuilt to work - even with a mostly decent FPS. Had problems with that as soon as I got to somewhat crowded places, even Balmora cut the FPS down to 20-30. In places like Old Ebonheart it could not even reach 10 anymore. I solved that problem by reading a lot and trying various settintgs... I disabled V-Sync and now I get 100+ in Balmora etc. and arround 25 in Old Ebonheart. Basically fine playable by my standards, so I am happy with that.

But I can't get really far in Old Ebonheart (that was the only place I tryed that the last hours since that error occured the first time after fixing fps). I can walk arround the docks and a bit into the city itself, but at some point the game simply crashes back to desktop. i tryed that a few times and it crashes always in the same place - so there is no random crashing involved as far as I think. Thing is, before that, the game crashed eventually "chocking" on the fps arround 1-2, freezing after several seconds (that was not limited to Old Ebonheart, but basically everywhere, where I got that low fps) now the fps in Old Ebonheart ist stable arround 25 right up to the crash.

The warnings says the following:

Texture "Textures\_land_default.tga" count 3.
Texture "Textures\menu_thick_border_bottom_right_corner.dds" count 2.

A while ago I had errors with missing meshes, I normally can make some sence out of the warning.txt, but this warning I really have no idea.

Update:

So I played a bit through TR. I traveled from Ildrim to Old Ebonheart by walking. No problems or crashes alle the way to Vuhl and Old Ebonheart. In Ebonheart I even could visit the tower coming from the south. But as soon as I try to walk through the city coming from south to north, to the docks, the game crashes in the same area as if I am coming from the docks. The warning.txt does not say anything new, so I have no idea what the problem could be. Also all the way coming from Ildrim, the fps was mostly 150+ even with a lot of objects (trees, plants, etc). In Ebeonheart it was arround 60 in the tower and upper district (place at the bridge leading to the tower). The fps drops down to 30 and less as I walk in the direction of the docks and midway the game just crashes.

I can only assume there is something in that particular cell that crashes the game. But I have absolutely no idea what.

Also yesterday as I "got the whole thing to work", I installed also the Morrowind optimization patch.

  • 2 weeks later...

So I will just push this topic of mine.

I can run OpenMW with Tamriel Rebuilt very well now, without lags (at least without lags I can noticewhile playing).

I also played a bit on the mainland - it looks very good btw - and did some quests. But I have a problem, that gets somewhat gamebreaking now. I already explained the crash I have in Old Ebonheart alway in the same area (cell) without any reasonable explanation I can come up with. I just avoided going there, thinking it is a problem with TR. I coul have went with that...

Short afterwards I started the Mage Guild. And I had the same unreasonable crash if I enter the Sadrith Mora Guildhall. It does not matter if I come from the castle entrance or via teleport, it always crashes the exact time I enter. Now I d not know if that is a known bug and I did not have a big problem with not going to Old Ebonheart or Sadrith Mora Guild. But now I have to enter Sadrith Mora for quests and that is no fun.

I tryed to google, but the most resent thing I could find was kinda same problem but the bugreport is more than 2 years old and was with a much older version of OpenMW. I also tryed to cut out TR, but with vanilla OpenMW the bug is still there without any change.

This is my Warnings txt:

Changing to interior
Loading cell Ald'ruhn, Magiergilde
Unhandled controller NiPathController on node 90 in meshes/e/magic_cast_myst.nif
Playing music/explore/morrowind title.mp3
Changing to interior
Unloading cell
Loading cell Sadrith Mora, Wolfenhalle: Magiergilde
warning UleniDead line 4, column 27 ("Gateway_haunt")
stray string argument (ignoring it)

Edit:

And now, after trying arround by deactivating and activating the several mods to locate the problem of the crashes, I have the lags again after getting obvious warnings. Why exactly is that stuff so brutally unstable?

Looks like you're using a non-English version of the game, based on Cell names. AFAIK there are no German, French etc. versions of Tamriel Rebuilt. Also, no idea how OpenMW handles Cell names, as they're the unique ID for a Cell and can change with localisations.

That was actually a problem long time gone when I first tryed TR. Back then I tryed the Mod on its own with my german version of MW. Did not work at all. Now I play with OpenMW, and overall TR works. I would also think the problem is somewhere between my german version of MW and TR. Thing is, it should happen all the time then, but it only happens in a couple of cells and as far as I noticed only in Wolverine Hall on the base content of MW. I got that crash more often with content of TR like in Old Ebonheart. That contradicts the potential problem with the german version of MW, because there should not be a problem if OpenMW loads a cell of TR (my explanation here is kinda confusing I have to admit).

Also content of the basegame, basically all of Vvardenfell and Solstheim, is shown in German. As soon as I go to the mainland, the greetings are still in German, but every other "new" dialog is in English. So OpenMW sorts that somewhat right. Only that specific few locations are crashing for no reconstructable reason.

Edit: The crash also happens if I deactivate all mods and onky playing vanilla OpenMW.

Edit2: Ok, at least I could solve the laggs, it was the loadorder in the .ini. Now it runs smove again. Interesting sidenote on that point: As I had those lags (arround 5 fps on average), I had no crash in Old Ebonheart, but still in Wolverine Hall *facepalm*
