Been updating mods since update, still crashing: help, please?

Hello, and good evening. First I would like to apologize for this: this is my first game update since abandoning Oldrim for SE: and I was unaware of how Creation Club updates apparently have a reputation for breaking SE and thus requiring preparations, and in the future I'll try to disable updates, but for now I'm trying to fix the game. I've updated SKSE and multiple mods that I see have updated, such as the Unofficial Patch, but the game is still breaking constantly. I've already uninstalled TK Dodge until an update comes out as it makes the game CTD, and I was trying a new character in general with the Alternate Character Start mod, something I've never used in Skyrim.

Right off the bat the game is fragile: when the game is registering MCM menus I usually need to stay still until its done. Especially when items from Apocalypse start spawning: if I'm moving and running around the game CTDs. If I stay in first person and move slowly I can get to the Statue of Mara and the bed, which works. Choosing the Vigilant of Stendarr option takes me to the Hall of the Vigilant as normal. Attempting to use the Alchemy table however causes a CTD. Using COC to travel to Riverwood I was able to use the Forge, but upon exiting it crashed the game. I was trying to do this by myself, but I'm at my wits' end now trying to diagnose whats wrong I apologize if this is the wrong place to go for this: if it is inform me and I'll take care to not do it again. But if anyone can help me figure out whats constantly crashing the game, I'd be very appreciative.

Did you run Loot? Might show an error or two

https://www.loverslab.com/topic/94228-sse-conversion-tracking-mar-14-yes-sse-1573-yes-skse-2015-no-sexlab-see-first-post/

^ There is a list right at the top of the post showing which mods need an Update, which have been updated and which might dont need an update because of SKSE

I believe It doesnt list every mod that needs SKSE but it should list the most common ones

(I have no clue about Bashed Patches but someone who does might ask whats inside it)

i see you have a few Oldrim mods in your load order.

Oldrim mods will not work in Skyrim Special Edition, unless properly ported. if they are not properly ported, they will cause all sorts of issues, ranging from CTDs to other issues.

Oldrim BSA files will not Work in Skyrim Special Edition at all, they would need to be Extracted and Re-Packaged using Skyrim SE archive Tool.

Oldrim ESP files will need to converted to Form 44

Oldrim Mesh Files will need to be Optimized, or they will cause CTDs

Oldrim Cubemaps will need to be Compressed to Bc7 or they will cause CTDs when attempting to view items that are using the uncompressed Cubemaps.

Re-Enable the mods that have been disabled by Wrye Bash, then open Wrye Bash, Rebuild Bash Patch - Click on Skip When it Asks to Merge Mods - then on the next window, untick the box that says Merged Mods, it is not nessrary to merge mods if you are below 255 Active Plugins (you only have 130 plugins, nowhere near 255, merging anything that is not Leveled lists is completely redundant and can do more harm then good), then Build the Patch Again, so it only merges leveled lists.

As mentioned in the Above Reply, Run LOOT and take note of any issues it mentions.

Note: their is a very good chance that all of the Oldrim mods you are using, are the reasons why your game is unstable, because they are not ported properly.

From my end, after playing the game some more, the problem appeared to be TK Dodge. Installing the updated version of TK Dodge has largely stabilized the game. I thought removing it and patching FNIS would remove its problems: do you have to do more beyond that? I'm surprised it was causing such extreme problems, I thought with it uninstalled the game would be relatively stable.

I've been trying to avoid Oldrim mods with the exception of mostly hair mods: Inconsequential NPCs was ported by someone else and I'm using a few leftover hair mods from Oldrim that hasn't been uploaded for SSE. WIth the exception of Lovely Hairstyles which I had to optimize. I haven't optimized the rest, but that does make me wonder; usually in character creation when I switch genders to make a female character, the game does tend to freeze for a minute before stabilizing itself. The hair mods dont' seem to affect the stability of the game, but if I optimize them properly (I only did it for Lovely) will that probably prevent the freezing in character creation?

That actually is great to know though- I thought mods that need no scripts or SKSE or anything like that are usually stable form porting from Oldrim to SE, which is why I've been confident with my hair mods. There are a few mods from Oldrim though I want to port including one that adds a sun damage enchantment, so that help is appreciated!

Also, I was testing some out: Inconsequential NPCs was ported by someone else that said it was ready for SE, but it didn't seem to be working right and was causing a CTD in a tavern, so I uninstalled it. Might not have caught that if not for your advice, so I appreciate it.

happy to help

as for the freezing when switching to female, i believe this is caused by using an excessive amount of body, face and hair mods.

i also freeze for like 10 seconds when switiching to female characters in character creation (males seem to load instantly however), but likewise i am using an excessive amount of mods for females, such as Ks Hairdos (700 odd hairs) and also Apachii hairstyles which basically takes my total amount of availble hairs for females to like almost 1000, Lind's Human Eyes (ported myself for private use, absolutely no issues with it), Neithteam warpaints and another oldrim face paint mod which the name escapes me (which i also ported both for private use) and Lifelike idle animations mod (which is another mod that only works on females for ovbious reasons) so yea. it is very minor issue though compared to all the goodies we get for ultimate customization  and the freeze is literally only when swapping to female for the very first time, the freeze is completely eliminated after that.

i am thinking the freeze is caused by having too many available hairs, as the game would need to load all of them within the same time it takes to switch to female (i believe is how it works).

plus i am also using 8K Skin textures for my females, so yea thats a lot to process for the game.

i very much doubt its the mods themselves causing the issues however, rather its because i have a ridiculous amount of them. as the mods themselves have absolutely no issues, with the extensive time i have spent using em.

FYI. I was crashing, too. Turns out that there have been two versions of SKSE64 since the update. Installing the latest stopped my crashing.

  • 2 weeks later...

As of yesterday, two mods I identified as not being updated yet and causing issues were the .Net Script Framework and To your Face - Sensible NPC Commenting. I believe it is also Quick Loot RE that depends on .Net Script Framework (I don't remember that requirement before) so the new version of that is more than likely an issue as well based on requirements.

I don't see any of them in your list, but in my searches this morning I also saw a thread saying Race Menu was causing issues, and that is in your list. Just a head's up. The author was pretty adamant it was causing his issues due the the successive SKSE updates, but I can't say for certain. All I know is it required me going back to 1.5.62 to get my game working again, and Race Menu was one of the mods I reverted to the previous version as well. I'm just trying to get this figured out too. Is anyone having good results after updating, and is Race Menu in/out of your load order? I'd just really like to eliminate some possibilities, and I don't want it to be a Race Menu issue because I've got half a dozen or so mods that require it.

Quick Loot RE doesnt depend on Net Script Framework

Its only recommended for crash logging.. I believe

If he has NSF enabled he wouldnt even be able to start the game. NSF shows you an error about it not being able to start because of an .dll or something like that and then nothing happens

Yeah, I don't think it was listed in the previous version as one, but it is now being listed as a "requirement" for Quick Loot RE. I had just installed RE from the SE version before the update and I don't have that as being required. Could be my oversight. I haven't been able to update for some reason yet, so I really don't know if it works without .NSF.

But now that I have your attention, thank you for that link to Lovers Lab above. It's not a complete list, but it gives a start on SKSE dependent mods for those of us who are too lazy to search through 681 mods to see if it is.
