VR 3rd person view

Could VR work for third person view? Right now the selling point is immersion of me being right in the game. So mainly explorational or educational reasons, which is not very broad for such expensive technology. But what about roleplayers? could more complicated games work in VR? Maybe without it VR will not be so massive - a lot of people have a problem not seeing themself at all or being sick. So would seeing my own character before me work there and solve that problem for that kind of players?

I know that it used to be popular when it started - movies in 3d IMAX technology - it doesn't require your head to be attached to the camera, so why not games?

Thanks for asking a great question, Mudran.

(I tried to send a technical long-form response, though it was a bit too 'post-structural' for that format).

Could VR work for third person view?

yes, and indeed it does.

It depends on how the "VR-ification" is achieved.

that gets technical, and touches on similar things such as

"Why are reflections in videogames limited, and not 'real-time parallel process'?"

So mainly explorational or educational reasons, which is not very broad for such expensive technology.

VR technology can be used for many things beyond that;

"pre-envisaging" as part of surveying and architectural,

FirstPersonVision Drone Racing and "Telepresence"

through to use as a microscope/multi-scope etc.

could more complicated games work in VR?

You bet!

imagine some games which work based on string theory or higher dimensional theory.

There's also rumors of a "Stanley Parable" game

------

a lot of people have a problem not seeing themself at all or being sick

indeed, a lot of folks are unable to perceive optical illusions or fractal art etc.

Someone told me that Microsoft is going to use VR in other areas than just games which are not their main focus, so they are OK with their technology, but what I can see is that people were very excited with 3d movies, so it would be interesting if something less complicated, but still similar to virtual space could be more flexible for gaming. Still a lot of my ideas - like converting isometric games into 3rd person view - didn't turn out to be practical, because I didn't realize that it is not just a problem of combat and less detailed textures, but the fundamental design of level building is different, where in 3rd person/1st person view you require to have more open space in order to enjoy the scenery, while in isometric games you see much more around as a player from the top view, and you are focused on different aspects of the game, so when some game studio tried to do it, it wasn't successful, so I'm afraid to speak about what would be successful or not. Just it looks to me like VR development is a bit paused - there are more games in VR, but most of them looks more experimental rather than dealbreakers.

I can see the "loop" problem here - they want it to be: you are in virtual reality, but at the same time - you cannot move properly in virtual reality, because you can't in reality, so in gaming - wouldn't be more practical to have simply 3d space with occulars for immersion rather than detailed complicated VR technology connected to player directly? I guess we will see where the development will lead.

edit: now I'm going to google all those technological terms to get more insight - thanks for hinting/sharing them.

I'm just spit balling here but ... I see VR (hehe pun intented) as just a clunky attempt , and maybe even damaging to our eye's / eye paths. Untill ... we can take our actual eye's out of the render pipeline ... reliably and safe of course. Render in the minds eye. But then again that may ultimately lead to a more destructive path on the eyes ?

Or I guess a holo deck approach would be better. Even if that means sitting in a chair inside the room with our present user input mechanisms. Possibly just a 1 meter cube/sphere we stick our heads in to alleviate the sickness of present VR.

And that could be pretty awesome still in a 3rd person view.

Everybody wants to be a fly on the wall don't they ? At least untill somebody waves a fly swatter
