Mod Creation

This is for anyone out there with modding experience. Are there any particular skills one needs in order to make mods with the DAO toolset (i.e. a background in computer graphics/design)? Also, is the toolset compatible with Windows 10?

Thanks!

I have the toolset installed on Win10, and it works fine.

As for the rest - it depends entirely on what you're trying to do. Being a logical problem-solver will help, as will being resourceful, patient, willing to do a lot of research, and the ability to read and understand some detailed technical material.

Different types of modding require different skill sets. If you want to mess with meshes, you'll probably want to install and learn to use some additional 3D modeling software, changing textures or icons call for graphic editing know-how. Coding skills would help with any scripting you would want or need to do to achieve your ends. Other things - like creating new items or changing properties on existing items - can all be handled fairly easily with the toolset.

@FIREFLY11; I think the best way to get into modding any game is to:

  • Play it;
  • Find mods for it you think you'll like;
  • Install them;
  • Play the game with them installed;
  • Examine the crap out of those mods, contact their authors, learn what tools (if any) were used to create them, learn how to use those tools; and most importantly;
  • Start small and simple when making your first mod!

Thanks a lot for the advice guys. That sounds like a good approach to take. I've got lots of ideas for mods & hopefully I'll become proficient enough to make them a reality & maybe even be able to share them one day. I'd love to be able to help further enrich an already epic game for myself & others. And SkyMoves, don't worry about the brain crashing--we've all been there before, so just kick back/take a trip to Starbucks/get some R&R. : )

Best to everyone,

I was wondering that too, in terms of softwares needed and special skills/specific coding knowledge. I'm just starting to dive into the toolset and various tutorials online - this should keep me busy for the next 9 weeks while I supervise the kiddos in the pool :happy: (I'm not much of a swimmer, the shaded patio works great for me :cool:)

There's a thread full of great links - you might have seen it already, but if not, it's right here: https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/382203-how-do-i-create-a-mod/
