My own fish names?

This is a minor nitpick, but has anyone ever wished they could name their own flora and fauna as it's discovered/caught/scanned? How do we know, for instance, that something is a "gary fish" or the dozens of other odd animal names? Are all of these fish and their names already common knowledge to space travelers? The scan info doesn't seem to indicate this.
