Game Crashes @ Wonders of Thedas

Hi again, this is becoming a habit, I know (My thanks to Sky in advance!). Two tech issues this time.

1) I have the Theodosian warden armor, but when I equip the gauntlets, it causes the character's arms to become invisible from the elbows down. Also if the boots are equipped in some cases there will be an invisible gap in the knees.

2) After I accept the Slim Couldry quests, complete the first one & accept the 2nd, my game crashes & returns me to my desktop browser when I try to enter the Wonders of Thedas. I tried entering the shop before accepting the Slim quests & the area loaded. When I tried going in again after accepting & completing the first of the Slim quests, again things crashed back to the desktop. I had been skipping through lots of conversations before the crashes; I've heard somewhere that if you skip with the ESC button too much it can cause the game to shut down, but I don't know if this is true. I want to complete the Slim quests but don't know if this is a game breaker.

Thanks for any help & best regards (until the next mishap! : P,

UPDATE: Alright gang, I think I've solved this. I loaded a game prior to Denerim, & immediately accepted Slim's quests w/o talking to anyone, skipping thru the conversations or accepting any other side quests (before I had accepted others). I was able to complete the first stealing quest & the Wonders of Thedas quest (Ser Nancine) that previously caused things to crash. Havn't tried the other Slim quests yet, but we'll see what happens. Also may have found a bug with ARR--When my warden & Alistair went for their private dinner @ the tavern, the options were for them to change out of their armor into different clothes or eat in their armor. I chose the change clothes option, but they were wearing their armor anyway.

Is it this mod?

If the gap at the knees occurs when all the items are from the same mod, it's probably just how the meshes are made... 'joint gaps' occur with some other modded armours, and are also common when combining modded items with vanilla pieces.

Re the 'invisible' gloves (and some of the following assume that the mod in question is the one I linked above):

1- Is it all armour weights that are affected?

2 - Have you installed the 'missing GDA file' from the downloads page? Not having that could certainly make for 'invisible' gauntlets, at least for the massive armour set.

3 - If it is all weights and the loose GDA is installed, you may have an ItemVariation conflict with that mod and another one. Unfortunately, my go-to resource for ItemVariation IDs, Valerie1972's ItemVariation spreadsheet, does not seem to have that mod entered yet, but the 'Fast and Dirty Guide to ItemVariation conflicts' linked in my sig outlines the process for identifying and patching such conflicts.

The crashing-when-entering an area problem could be almost anything - I once encountered a clothing item from a mod that caused my game to CTD when entering the party camp if it was equipped by my HF Warden, while both Wynne and Leliana could wear it without any issues - but Denerim is especially problematic, even in vanilla, as a result of the large number of scripts firing and the high concentration of NPCs. What is odd, though, is that you are crashing when leaving the marketplace, since usually the CTDs in Denerim occur when entering that area... and without a complete list of installed mods it's impossible to even speculate as to a cause.

The usual advice for getting past Denerim crashes is to be sure the game executable has been patched with either the Large Address Aware or 4GB patch, and to remove any hi-res environmental texture packs, but I'm not sure if that is relevant in this case.

Yeah, that's the armor mod. I installed the GDA file you suggested & that resolved the issue with the armor sets except the ones that I picked up in Ostagar. The ones that appeared in the camp seem to be fine. I'll still check the conflicts guide you suggested as well. I've still been having Denerim crashes, mostly involving the Slim quests but also the Trial of the Crows. I managed to get around this by completing the quests one at a time, returning to camp, saving & then completing the next one. I won't save in Denerim b/c I have some saves where I did that & when I try to load them the game crashes. In order to return to camp for the save, I cannot go to the world map via the menu; I have to go to an exit, have the map pull up, & then click on the wide world & hope for the best. I did have some crashing issues in Lothering, but nothing like this. It's a nuisance to say the least. Like you said, the weird thing is that I have no problem with accessing Denerim, but rather leaving the market (i.e., Wonders of Thedas, sometimes the tavern). As far as mods go, I must admit I went crazy once I learned how to install them--I've easily got around 35+. I don't have Improved Atmosphere, though since I heard that can be problematic. I have a lot of the major ones like Rescue @ Ishal, ARR, the Royal Wedding, the ones by Tinamaus & Sarah Cousland, some of yours (the ring & Alistair's Rose for instance--endorsements coming up after I finish this!) plus most of the new locations like Inverness, Ceridan's Refuge, & others. Also I've noticed the textures of the clothing of the Denerim NPCs going haywire off & on. This happened in Lothering too with the textures. I'll also look into the 4GB patch as well. I'm beginning to think Thandal was right about getting the game as a download instead of using the physical disc. If I did that, would I lose all my mods I've downloaded & the mod manager & have to re-install?

Again, many thanks for all the help!

Best always,

@FIREFLY11;

You would not "lose" your Characters, Saves, or any mods in your \override folder. Those would all remain and work exactly as before.

But you would have to re-install any .dazip mods, which should be a breeze. (You do keep the original downloads in a separate folder, don't you? )

Thanks, Thandal, good to know. Yes, I keep them separate & no prob for me installing the zips. If I can learn to install mods, there's hope for anyone ; ). If the crashing doesn't get any better, I'll go the download route. It's just that I'm about 40% of the way through the campaign & I want to make it through at least one playthrough! After playing DAO UE on PS3 & Xbox, I can already say that A LOT of vanilla things were cut from the console versions. As for the mods, I'm stunned at what I missed out on all these years! The modding community should get an annual parade to say the least! Once I enjoy some playthroughs, then I'm going to learn to use the Toolset. Thanks for the info & best to everyone!
