Game will not load.

Recommended Posts

Ive been modding the game pretty heavily, and it finally has reached its limit. The problem is, now its not working and I cant figure out what and where to disable things to have it working again. I would be greatly appreciative of any help: even if it means I have to start a fresh save. On the rare instances where my old save WILL load, I appear in a blank room and it crashes moments after.

I`ve never posted anything like this before, so if theres more information needed, please let me know. Thank you in advance.

With 98 plugins, you are only about 3/4 of the way to the "plugin cap" (which is somewhere between 128-140, depending). But just where the game stops and what it is doing at that moment makes a difference.

Anytime the game "Crashes to the Desktop" (CTD) it's typically going to generate an error message in the Windows Eventlog. Please see the "Windows Error Messages" section of the wiki "How to read most Bethesda game error logs" article.

Please see the 'Vanilla Load Order' entry in the 'First Timer Advice' section; and the 'Common Game Problems' section of the wiki "FNV General Mod Use Advice" article.

If the problem persists, then see either the 'Solutions to Starting the game problems' or the 'Solutions to "Crash To Desktop" (CTD) problems' sections in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide.

I recommend anyone read the entire "FNV General Mod Use Advice" article to understand the differences between this game and others you may have experience with; especially if this is your first attempt to play a modded FNV or it's been more than a year since you last did so.

Please provide ALL the information requested in the wiki "How to ask for help" article. Don't forget to identify things that do not appear in the "load order", such as if you are using a "regional language version" of the game (even if you are playing it in English); using the FNV4GB Patch, NVSE and it's related plugins; replacements for textures (specifically their larger image sizes: 1024x1024, etc.), animations, or "bodies", etc.; and "post-processors" like ENB or SweetFX. It saves us playing "20 questions" and gets you a more specific answer more quickly. (The usual turn-around on post and reply in an older game forum is 24 hours.)

* See "How to markup images (etc) in forum posts and comments" article for how to use "Spoiler tags". LOOT already includes those tags in the "load order" it copies to your clipboard, so you can just paste it's list into your post.

Are you launching the game from within a "mod manager"? If so, try launching it outside of the manager to see if you get any error message. (Identifying which mod manager you are using, or if you are not, is also helpful info.)

A program "hang" typically means the program got "lost" as to it's next instruction. If Task Manager is just reporting that it is not accruing any CPU cycles ("CPU Time"), that is likely the reason. If the game is not found in Task Manager "Applications" or "Processes" tabs, that suggests a CTD and there should be an "Eventlog | Application" error entry.

Exactly when during the initialization process the game hangs determines your likely cause and course of action. Those are detailed in the 'Solutions to Starting the game problems' section in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide. If that doesn't resolve things, then the 'Common Game Problems' section of the wiki "FNV General Mod Use Advice" article is your next best approach. We will need moe detail as to what you have tried to make any other suggestions. (Those readings cover the virtually everything preventing a game from starting.)

I am launching it from the Nexus Mod Manager, with the NVSE option.

I tried launching it from the Steam launcher, but it seemed to have pretty much the same issue: it loaded in, but then it had me in a blank, gray room and softlocked moments later.

Tried launching it from the 4BG launcher. Attempted to load before hardlocking.

That running from Steam Launcher got as far as a "blank, gray room" suggests the game in that instance did actually load before hanging.

Please see the wiki "Missing Masters" article.

Then refer back to the 'Solutions to Starting the game problems' section in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide. Make sure you have the DirectX9 drivers installed (in addition to those which are already installed).

Please provide more detail as to how far you are getting in the load process. For instance, are you getting up to the game "splash screen", to the "main menu", to the point after you have selected to start a "New Game", etc.. That progress tells us how far things have gotten and what is likely wrong.

When you say "Tried launching it from the 4BG launcher. Attempted to load before hardlocking.", was there any error message (no matter how fleeting or if you were unable to read it)?

On a more general note:

The following entries in the wiki 'Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting' guide specifically address known Win10 problems:
* 'Issue: NVSE - fails to load after update KB4058043 to Win10 FCU (v1709)'
* 'Issue: Incomplete save game load' (NVSR related)
* 'Issue: Vanilla game Hangs on startup'; specifically "Cause-1" regarding DirectX9 drivers.
* 'Issue: "Full screen mode" exhibits CTDs and stutters or micro-stutters'
* 'Issue: Recent (post-Win10 FCU) CTDs after 10-20 minutes of play' (NVSR related)
* 'Issue: Lag or "micro stutters" even with "New Vegas Stutter Remover" installed (or not)'. In particular "Cause-4" regarding video card settings. The latest video drivers may not be the best suited to an older game like FNV. All vendors drop testing of old games at some point. Backwards compatibility is never guaranteed, much less "optimization".
Also, "Cause-7" regarding "Superfetch" and "File search indexing". Windows updates will often reset these back on.
* 'Issue: Win10 Screen tearing in "Borderless Windowed Mode"'
* 'Issue: ENB Support for Windows versions later than Win7'
* 'Issue: Problems using ENB/SweetFx on Windows 10'

First of all, thank you again for your time.

The game almost always reaches the opening title menu, and will allow me to select new game, load game, ect. However, the second I hit load game it appears to load. However, it wont allow me to move my cursor. Usually it simply loads forever, but rarely it reaches that point where it loads to the gray room.

No error messages that I could see anywhere, even with alt tab.

I tried installing Directx. No noticed changes. The game was working previously, for what its worth.

I tried using FNVedit as it recommends, but unless i`m missing something I saw no errors and it did not seem to make changes.

FNVEdit doesn't make any changes for you; it simple enables you to make them for yourself. But it would tell you if you had any "missing masters" and which plugins required them, so that is something else eliminated.

Getting to the main game menu is good. It means you got past the point where the DirectX9 drivers are accessed (among other things), so you probably didn't need them but it doesn't hurt either.

No error messages strongly suggests nothing executing is tripping up the OS. It's just getting "lost" to the point where it can no longer find code to proceed.

So, the key thing remaining is the information: "the second I hit load game". That means you somehow were able to save a game previously (new data not mentioned previously!) but now it is either missing something essential (i.e. plugin(s) from the previous setup) or is corrupted. (See explanation below if the latter event.)

Now you need to try to "Start New Game" and at least get through Doc Mitchell's house door into the Wasteland proper. Once outside, look around and let any "loading DLC/mod" messages display before you save that moment. This will become your "baseline" test file for checking if adding a new mode is causing a problem later on (and "not-so" coincidentally saving you all the time to create a character for testing in the future), so make note of or change the name of the file to one you will remember for that purpose. It wouldn't hurt to toggle "on" the console command "tgm" and run through the 'Testing' section of the wiki "FNV General Mod Use Advice" article to ensure this is a good stable point for your test baseline.

If you can't get out of Doc's house with a "new game", that is another issue. Be sure to provide details similar to the last post.

If you can, then you likely have a corrupted save game file. Any time you remove a plugin from your current play-through you risk corrupting your save game files. This is because they typically store information there as to the state of their variables and quests. If you picked up a unique (non-vanilla) item added by a mod, that item (like any item you pick up) is stored in the save game, but also requires the plugin it came from to be available as that item's "source records". Hence the general advice to never remove a plugin from your current game.

* Please see the paragraph about "auto-saves" under the 'Essentials for Getting Started' section of the wiki "FNV General Mod Use Advice" article. If you have been using the built-in "auto-save" feature and you get the endless "roulette wheel" when loading a save game, then your current save game file is corrupted and you will have to either go back to a save before the corruption occurred (hard to tell) or start over.
