About a month ago, I began to notice my game crashing more and more often. It happened so frequently, one day I just deleted-freaking-everything and walked away.

But I realized I like this game too much, and I was just too ignorant and impatient with my situation to have resolved it properly.

So, now, I beseech you, fellow players/enthusiasts... What are your best tips for preventing these things from happening, and resolving them when they do?

I suspect that my 100+ Mods had something to do with it, but I've seen other people with far more Mods who don't seem to have these issues.

Thank you

I, too, have suffered a rash of CTDs lately. So far, I've failed to discover the offending mod. All I can do is whittle things down to a core of trusted mods...things like body slide, Clean & Simple settlements, Snappy.

This is supposed to be entertaining. Lately, it seems more like work.

How many do you have installed? I recall having around 107 mods when the crashing got really intense. The thing is I hear that others have 200+ and their setup runs fine.

Its not the number, its the quality. You have installed low quality mods that over time are either creating content bloat, script loops or conflicts.

Unfortunately there appears to be no way to detect quality. Even shocking crash generators have massive download stats and ratings, which just proves that people will eat anything.

I'm running about ~230 mods and I have no CTDs*, but... it's a lot of work. I troubleshooted a lot of issues I experienced. Specially lag spikes. It's best to add mods slowly.

If you experience a crash @somewhere, restart Fallout 4 and when you are in the menu you can use the coc command, for example: coc redrocketext01 or coc diamondcityext01.

Then you can go to that location and check if the crash occurs again. If yes, then deactivate all mods and test again. Slowly enable mods, which you suspect not to crash your game.

Also check your savegame size, if it's huge, then you have a leak.

You can always search a mods forum and look for keywords like: CTD, Crash etc. To see if someone else has a crash with this mod.

*There are CTD within the base game! They are random and can occurs or not. One of that area is Cambridge Police Station. When you approach it while Danse is doing his thing there with the Ghouls, your game can crash randomly.

Thank you for your suggestions.

Is there some tool out there which records game instances and can tell you what happened in the event of a CTD?

For some reason, I can't delete the quotes, so the answer bloats it further.

Best way to look is under event viewer/windows logs/system/apllication. That's where it tells you what part of your system didn't agree with your game at the time of the crash.

You can take it from there and do some internet research on how other people dealt with the issue at hand. It took me a long time to find it, but after I made sure it was always the same reason, I could resolve my crash issues.

It won't tell you what mod may be causing it, but it tells you what part of your system gave up. Which is the more important part.

So, where is the list of "Mods That Triggered CTDs"? I know of one mod: Homemaker 1.72. The author knows about it but no fix yet.

Seems to me this should be a thing. Make a list. If your mod is on the list, fix it, then we take it off the list. Meanwhile, casual players, like myself, can avoid the headaches.

I use Homemaker. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

I'm using Homemaker and I have no crashes. Did you use any objects from homemaker and do the crashes occur when entering the settlement / is getting loaded?
