[REQUEST] Actual uses for faction money

I might have an idea. Someone could make a unique HUD where, rather than a trading menu, a generic options menu would appear, & it would ask for a certain amount of NCR Dollars (Or Legion Coins) & in return, you would recieve a set amount of a specific item.

exactly, i dont know what you guys are talking about, the money is L I T E R A L L Y useless

It's literally not. They're weightless and have a set Value unaffected by Barter skill. An item worth 40 caps can traded with $100 NCR or ten Legion Denarius'. Functionally they are no different than caps, it's just that one item doesn't always equal one unit of Value.

The only problem is that the engine only officially recognizes one item as "currency", and only recognizes one unit of that item as one unit of currency. (Which means NCR's individual Bills wouldn't be recognized.)

The alternative currencies also aren't available in as many denominations as a proper paper/coin currency would be in, so they use Caps for "change." So it's more or less impossible to exclusively use an alternative currency. (Which isn't really the point of them anyway.)

What might be done in order to better implement various currencies is, ironically to turn Caps into a misc item, like the other currencies. Ideally the Inventory/Barter Menu would have a new Currency section to sort them for convenience.

The only downside is that it removes a lot of the automation in trading, as there is no longer a "Gold" item that is automatically distributed between the player and their trade partner while exchanging items.

But it isn't useless. Instead of theorizing from a distance, just give my earlier suggestion a try.

Can you actually spend anything with it? No you only use caps.

Faction currency is treated like an inventory item, so you have to barter with it. Go to any store, start a trade, look through your inventory and find the money you want to spend, then trade that money for whatever you want in return.

In addition to bartering, the casino cashiers will also sell you casino chips for faction money.

I have to wonder if those who think it is literally worthless don't understand how the bartering menu works. You could literally go through the entire game using nothing but faction money to buy things with. Literally.

The problem is you sell the money to a vendor in exchange for caps, which makes no sense to sell money in exchange for money. I think what the request is asking for is to make a system where you exclusively use dollars or coins for money & not bottlecaps.

Yes, I know. I was talking to madmongo, who said you can exchange various currencies for caps. I was talking about no exchanging, no selling money for money, just use an alternate currency in place of bottlecaps entirely. I apologize if I'm being a jerk. I've been having a horrible few months due to my nausea & headaches.

Think of it like international travel. Many places accept some currencies, but not others ("No Legion scrap") and even when they do, the exchange rate may vary daily. So you may have to go to a money exchange to convert from your currency to one accepted locally. Often this is desirable IRL to make it easier to "make change" without having to resort to an "exchange rate table" that may be "out-of-date". In the FNV world, casinos are the "money exchangers".

All currencies have to be "acceptable" to those using them. Which means people have to be willing to take them at face value or some agreed upon exchange rate. Your "alternative currency" idea faces the same problem, and the game world has already made that decision.

Can't it be done? IIRC, In Fallout 3, there is that Outcasts outpost where you trade technology for gear. It was replicated in TTW, so it isn't impossible. Now, if it's possible to do without tearing your hair out and spending a s#*! ton of time, that's different.

You can trade faction money for gear at any vendor.

Just to prove it, I created a new character, gave them a bunch of NCR money via the console (20 each of 5, 20, and 100 NCR dollar bills), and with no caps whatsoever, I bought a pistol and some ammo from Chet in Goodsprings using NCR money, went to the Mojave Outpost and bought Vodka from Lacey using only NCR money, and went to Freeside and purchased water from Tapper using only NCR money.

There were a couple of minor things that I found to be a bit annoying. Tapper would gladly sell me bottles of water for NCR money, he wouldn't let me buy a drink from the water pump using NCR money (NCR money works in the barter menu, but his conversation is not set up for it). Lacey doesn't have any NCR money in her inventory, despite being in an NCR outpost. I think she should have NCR money so that you could sell things to her in exchange for NCR money instead of caps. And you do have to count out the bills yourself in the barter menu. It won't just automatically calculate like it does for caps.

But it works, and it's not limited to specific gear like the Outcast outpost in FO3 and TTW.

In all honesty, I'm failing to see the problem that people are having in this thread with faction money.

What can't be done is integrating it into the barter menu like caps are. For everything else, it already works in-game. You don't need a mod.
