Does Vortex Manage Mods for NMS ?

Forgive me but I'm elderly and not very good with computers ....

I've manually installed a few mods and everything is working fine ... but I thought I'd try the Vortex Mod Manager to help me manage them and build an even better game ... but I'm stuck straight away and I thought I'd ask for help here.

I've selected the "location" for No Man's Sky and that is ...

C/Games/Steam/steamapps/common/No Mans Sky/Binaries

May I point out that I couldn't actually see the .exe for NMS following this path but I manually confirmed that is where the .exe is

But I get an error message saying ...
"Failed to set game mode ... Mod directory missing C:/Games/Steam/steamapps/common/No mans Sky/binaries/GAMEDATA/PCBANKS/MODS"

... and then I noticed that that file path is wrong ...

The /GAMEDATA folder isn't inside the Binaries folder as listed in that path ... It's actually in the /No Mans Sky folder with Binaries

Has anyone had this problem before??
Does Vortex actually work for NMS?

I've done a google search for an answer but I'm not finding anything ... although it doesn't help that NMS actually have and use the words "Vortex" and "Nexus" for other things and this clutters up my search results.

Please don't assume that I know what I'm talking about with my above description of the problem.
It's mostly me copying words out from the screen in front of me ... sorry

I dont use Vortex or mod the game, so do not know for sure if it does fully support modding NMS, but I have dabbled with modding other games and various mod managers, so here's what I think you need to do :

You say you chose ..

C:/Games/Steam/steamapps/common/No Mans Sky/Binaries

.. As the location for No Man's Sky

I think you should have chosen

C:/Games/Steam/steamapps/common/No Mans Sky

And then Vortex should have found Gamedata/PCBanks/Mods/

BUT - I think you also need to manually create the folder Mods/ first inside PCBanks/ ..

.. Unless Vortex already knows to create that Mods folder if one has not already been made.

By default the game does not make a mods folder in there, but HelloGames say you need to create it for the mods files to go in, and also delete the Disablemods.txt - I guess you will already know this if you have successfully manually modded the game before, so assuming you have, all you need to do is direct Vortex to choose the No Mans Sky/ folder as the location, and hopefully it will find Gamedata/PCBanks/Mods/

The mistake you made (again if I am correct) was to choose the Binaries/ folder as the location, so vortex then appended that in the middle of the file path after No Mans Sky/ where there is no Gamedata/PCBanks/Mods/ folder to be found

Hope that helps

Edit : I also note that you missed out the drive colon in one of your file paths

C:/Games/... etc would be correct

C/Games/... is not a valid file path

Maybe that was just a typo for this forum post?

Edit 2: Also if you have manually modded the game, and you already have manually installed Mods files, I would remove them before getting Vortex to take charge of modding the game .. You might confuse Vortex as to what should be in that folder or not, so just delete everything in the Mods folder, and then get Vortex to install them instead (assuming of course that Vortex does mod the game correctly).

Thank you for your help alt3rn1ty

I did try that game path you advised but it says "Game Not Found" ... the NMS.exe is actually inside the Binaries folder ....

And it says the game is managed but I get that error message saying "Failed to set Game Mode".

It was then that I spotted that the file path it was looking for wasn't correct.

Inside the No Mans Sky folder there are 2 folders ... one called Binaries and the other called GAMEDATA.

Yet Vortex is looking for the GAMEDATA folder inside the Binaries folder ... and it doesn't reside there.

I have created the "mods" folder inside GAMDATA/PCBANKS/ ... and deleted the Disablemods.txt file

I've removed the mods from the "mods" folder (there was only 5 of them) but I'm still stuck with that error message.

(BTW ... the missing colon is just lazy typing ... as is using a forward slash instead of a backward slash because my backward slash key produces a hashtag symbol and I can't be bothered to hit every key to find the correct one ... but your attention to detail is welcome ... that's how I spotted the wrong file path being used)

I think I'll just stick with manual modding as it's only a couple of mods but I was hoping to use this game as my intro into Vortex modding ... I use MO2 for Skyrim/F4 ... (sorry)

I started a thread on Steam about the problem but people there said to stick with manual modding so I don't think they're using Vortex ... google search didn't help and I don't really have the skills or understanding to fix this myself.

One last thing ... if I go to "Dashboard" then NMS ... i can double click on "open Game Folder" and I can see the NMS exe in the binaries folder ... double click on "open Mod folder" and nothing happens.

Ah well ....

But, alt3rn1ty ... once again ... thank you so much for attempting to help ... I do appreciate you taking the time to try to fix my problem.

It's just not to be for now ... maybe I'll try Vortex for XCom2 at some point in the future.

I've tried to fix this little problem via Vortex forums and Steam forum ... and google.

My last resort would be to try and contact Hellogames ... but I'm sure they're far too busy actually writing lots of new code for the other game problems they have ... rather than looking at my little problem ... which I can fix by just installing mods manually.

Equally ... I'm sure you've better things to do than help an idiot mod a game you don't play yourself ...

My very best wishes to you, sir ... onwards and upwards

No problem, and I do play the game, far too much  ( surprisingly even more than Egosofts X series of games which I have played for years )

I just dont bother modding it yet until HelloGames have finished updating / patching it .. Only been waiting 3 years  ( which is not half as bad as waiting for the community to fix all Bethesda's problems for them  Edit : Not blaming the community, they do a marvellous job of dedicating time and know how, just Bethesda could do with fixing a lot more problems before they move on to the next cash cow )

I was going to suggest giving Tannin42 ( Vortex programmer ) a nudge in the Vortex forums, but it sounds like you have already been down that route. See if you can PM him if his PMs are not flooded.

Anyway, good luck with your modding, I will be joining in a few years ( and probably making a few mods ), but for now keeping a clean install for continued beta testing and helping HelloGames out.

If you haven't seen it, I have a few tips on tweaking the game :geek:

Take care, Alt.

Edit : Ooh forgot to mention, HelloGames will not be able to solve the issue, their files / folders are where they should be, its Vortex that needs to be corrected for this game if its looking in the wrong place for Mods\.

  • 1 year later...

I'm also trying to use Vortex for Windows Store NMS, but haven't been able to add the game to the manager.

I figure this means that Vortex and Windows Store NMS are incompatible because of the locked WindowsApp files.

AndASM provided a utility to unlock Windows Store NMS for modding, but I've got the game installed on D:\ while the utility seems to modify the game on C:\. Vortex only detects the .exe on D:\ which results in the error above.

Am I doing this wrong?

It works just fine for me.

My files look like this :

C:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\Binaries\NMS.exe

C:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\GAMEDATA\PCBANKS\MODS

(Deleted: C:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\GAMEDATA\PCBANKS\DISABLEMODS.TXT)

Game path inside Vortex :

C:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\No Man's Sky

(not C:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\Binaries)

Your Windows user is missing editing rights on the MODS folder.

But it's strange, you should be the owner (creator). Did you create this folder yourself or is it Vortex? If it is Vortex, my guess would be to try deleting the MODS folder and recreate it manually.
