Character editor freezes if ~mod folder exists at all

Hey all, I enabled code vein management in vortex. After installing my preferred mods, I found that the game would run totally fine, unless I opened the appearance editor. This happened even if I did so from the New Game character creation. After some troubleshooting (moving drives, changing deployment methods, completely reinstalling the game a few times to make sure nothing lingered) I found that if the ~mods folder (...\steamapps\common\CODE VEIN\CodeVein\Content\Paks\~mods) exists at all, the game does this. I've confirmed by reinstalling the game clean and then running it from nexus with no mods active, and double checking in file explorer that the folder was empty as well.

The game freezes on the loading screen after you initiate the appearance editor, but before the editor actually pops up. It freezes entirely, meaning the loading screen animation stops, the game doesn't respond to alt + f4, and the only way to kill it is with task manager.

Is there any fix, or known workaround? Did I miss a step somewhere? Any help would be appreciated.

Windows 10 home, ryzen 5 1600, 16gb ddr4 ram, Radeon RX 580.

I was having a similar problem, but after some troubleshooting, I found that the problem wasn't the /~mods/ folder, but Vortex. Even without mods, if I launched the game from Vortex, it would freeze in character creation, but when I launched the game another way (ex. the shortcut in the start menu), character creation loaded instantly.

I don't use Vortex for this game and have multiple mods installed in the ~mods folder and it works fine. So as Death Dark said it's probably a Vortex issue more than anything else.

To be fair mods in this game are super easy to install/uninstall thanks to the ~mods folder, so I don't think Vortex is that necessary as it is for some games.

This did it. Thanks man, appreciate it. That's the one thing I didn't try.
