Outrageous load times

I'm getting stuck behind 10 minute+ load times no matter what I do. I have an amazing computer and this is not reasonable. I'm pretty sure something is set wrong somewhere, but I have no idea what.

I'm also getting random but consistent freeze ups mid game where it doesn't CTD (usually), just like.. hangs. In the papyrus log it says "VM is freezing.... VM is thawing out." This is not acceptable given my specs.

Intel Core i9 @ 3.60GHz

3071MB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti

32.0GB RAM

476GB SAMSUNG MZVLW512HMJP-00000 SSD (this is where skryim and steam are installed, my D drive, not in program files on C)

This is utterly unacceptable and I'm incredibly tired and frustrated from constantly dealing with this no matter what combination of mods I install

A lot of people think that, because they have an above average computer that can handle heavy duty stuff, they can throw anything at a game. Skyrim SE is basically a game from 2011 with an engine that is as old. So, plastering the place with 4K textures and mods that add dozens of NPCs will not break a sweat on CPU, GPU and RAM but will heavily burden the game's engine. And thus, maybe not acceptable, but surely expected.

And don't say "no matter what I do" when you haven't gone on a pilgrimage to Timbuktu to seek an audience with the Shaman Of All Things Moddable. If you can't find what causes the slow loads, start from scratch until you again encounter the same symptoms and you'll know where the problem lies.

I'm on an R7 2700X with a Vega 64 and 2x8GB of system RAM and have fairly normal load times with 574 mods of which 299 have a plugin. But it took time to get there and more restarts from scratch than I want to remember. Did everything six time over between last christmas and new year -that's more than three-thousand mods alltogether- so, hey.

Have you tried starting as new game or gone back to a low level save? I had the same symptoms back in June, just prior to the 1.5.80 update, caused by some crap or another I'd installed along the way (for instance, I was running both MFG Fix and Opparco at the same time, I had installed (and uninstalled) a couple of LE mods accidentally, etc etc). It (whatever "it" or "they" were) eventually broke my saves from the (at the time) current level 52 character all the way back to when she was only level 16. That is, everything from mid level 16 up through my at the time top level was borked. Very slow gameload times, slow cell transition times (also very slow..several minutes) somewhat routine CTDs, etc. That is, when they'd even load in the first place.

Another one I ran into later is "too many animations". When you have too many animations loaded (and don't go by the published max, it can hit far earlier) the game can bog down really bad. Your MCMs can stop working. animation drivers like SL can fail. Papayrus can get choked up by too many scripts running. etc. etc.

And not to hijack the thread, but if anyone knows how to clean saves of papyrus stuff (beyond the simple resaver technique) I'd love to strike up a conversation on that. Methinks many of us could benefit by getting a handle on that issue, since suspect a ton of the complaints about CTDs and sluggish performance could be addressed if we could get a handle on it...but I digress.

Try opening some really low level saves and see if the game works normally. Your issue *sounds to me like mine, and mine was accumulated crap in the save as I leveled her up. Partly my own fault, partly just normal build up of junk.

Oh, and if you happen to be like me and carry around an unnatural amount of loot (afaik my female character is carrying around 7800lbs right now, and the male character has around 22K lbs in his personal inventory), purge it. purge it hard. If you don't have one yet, find yourself a player home and dump that junk into chests to get it off your person. FWIW, on that subject, Peregrine Highwatch is one of the best player homes I've seen so far, and it has a ton of solid storage space (solid: ie, it is trustable, unlike some of the other player homes like underground bathhouse) . Worth every Septim I "paid" for it.

If your SSD is stuck at 100% usage, check where it's coming from via the task manager. There's a column (not sure if it's a default column) that shows "harddrive" usage for each running application. a click on the column header will sort by utilization to make it easier to isolate the offending application(s).

My guess, you have an antivirus program running in the background (windows or otherwise), something is downloading in the background (windows for instance with an update), you're pushing the drive well beyond its safe limits, (general rule of thumb: drives should be kept to less than ~70% of capacity for housekeeping purposes) and/or you need to defrag the drive. (in fact, defrag all but fails once your drive gets too full and takes far longer to execute even when its close to too full...

IFF your SSD is loaded up (I'd say much beyond 50% capacity), it's time to purge fluff files, and/or maybe purchase an "extra" regular drive to act as an archive drive, so that those housekeeping exercises aren't ' quite so painful as deleting can make it...
