Can barely run any mods without crash in combat

So, after a lot of troubleshooting, I've determined that I can barely run any mods in dragon age origins ultimate without the game crashing to desktop(without any error message) in select combat scenes (one with wolves in Lothering, and second in Soldier's Peak, with the skeletons at the start).

With just one mod (Grey Wardens of Ferelden Armor) everything works fine in those combat spots, but as soon as I start adding mods (even super small ones) I start getting the crashes. I've managed to get a stable game by removing certain textures fra the armor mod, and adding a few smaller mods. So at the moment I can get the game to be stable with about 5 mods together (including a reduced version of the armor mod i mentioned).

This has led me to conclude that the game is running out of memory. Problem is, it shouldn't after so few mods, and it even started while I was playing it via Origin, after having applied the 4gb patch as well. After getting these crashes on Origin (with the wolves in Lothering), I moved over to steam, but getting the same issues there (in Soldier's Peak).

I've montiored memory usage, which is under 1gb during combat, right before crash. Tried setting core affinities etc.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

- I'm running windows 10, SSDs, Geforce 1080, 16gb ddr4 ram.

Have you tried running the game in a compatibility mode?

On my potato PC, I find that it runs best under the Windows XP SP3 mode, with visual themes disabled, but it was a matter of trial and error to hit on the right combination for my setup.

testing it now.

update: no difference at all, with any of the windows versions.

Noticed that it seems to crash when it reaches 1 gb of memory being used. Reducing mods to keep it below that even during heavy combat seems to be the key. Weird.

Hmmm. That's really weird and apart from the above suggestion, I got nothin'... the game can be flaky, to be sure, but it's not so taxing on the system that a modded install shouldn't run just fine on your PC. (I play with literally hundreds of mods, and my computer is an ancient potato.)

You may want to post a query on the DAO board at EA Answers HQ; perhaps someone there may have some insight into what is going on.

Which core setting have you tested?

Your specs are fine - as were mine some years ago..

I have a vague memory that I had a resource management problem as well with the demo of DA 2. I was able to solve it at the time by assigning only half of the cores to DA 2, simultaneously setting the priority high for DA 2.

Is quite clear that the crashes happen when there are too many enemies. With fewer mods the game seems to be able to handle more and more enemies before crashing.

My only conclusion is that it's the 2gb memory leak issue, and that I must have done something wrong when i tried the 4gb memory patch previously. Gonna try it again.

Actually, it crashed again. Figured out that changing the Graphics Detail option from Very High to High fixed everything. This was the only change of graphics options that worked.

This did not , however, work on the steam version, having the 4gb memory patch seems to be key as well.
