Can't Get FO4SE To Work

Hello, lately I came back to modding Fallout 4 and Skyrim only to find out I had to transfer my stuff to Vortex (which this is what I've been doing for the past day or so). I've been focusing on Fallout 4 for the moment and haven't had any issues until I tried to install 0.06.21 version of FO4SE/F4SE. I currently have the 1.1.15 version of Vortex.

I removed the old version of F4SE before I extracted the new versions folder.
I originally extracted the F4SE folder to the wrong place (put it in my games folder where my Fallout 4 internet shortcut was), but I moved it to the right(?) place afterwards (Data folder in the Fallout 4 folder), but I still get the error message "can't find Fallout4.exe" (or something like that, can't remember the exact words). I'm hoping I put it in the right place and I'm not as stupid as I think I am.

I have about 87 mods and I play on x64 computer, btw. I'm not sure how relevant that information is, though.

No, you don't put it in the DATA folder.

Just follow the installation instructions included inside the ZIP file of F4SE

It says to put the Exe, and dlls in the GAME folder

F4SE install
[ Installation ]
1. Copy f4se_1_X_XXX.dll, f4se_loader.exe, and f4se_steam_loader.dll to your Fallout installation folder. This is usually C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Fallout 4\, but if you have installed to a custom Steam library then you will need to find this folder yourself.
2. Launch the game by running the copy of f4se_loader.exe that you placed in the Fallout installation folder.

Okay, I did this and it's still giving me the "couldn't find fallout4.exe" message.

You've copied the F4SE folder itself (f4se_0_06_21) into the game directory. That's why you're having problems. Put the contents of the folder and not the folder itself into the game directory. Your "Target" needs to be \Fallout\f4se_loader.exe., and your "Start In" needs to be \Fallout 4\.

Oh, alright. Do I need to put the Scripts folder in the Fallout 4 folder too?

Also, thanks. I got the game to open finally :D

That's because you didn't follow the instructions AT ALL.

It said to put the FILES f4se_1_X_XXX.dll, f4se_loader.exe, and f4se_steam_loader.dll to your Fallout installation folder, nowhere did it say just Copy the whole folder into the game folder

Sorry. Sometimes I struggle to read things. Thank you for helping, though.

  • 2 years later...

My script extender was working fine, did a play thru as a Lupine,

then tried to go back and play again but the save was not there and

then next time tried to play and vortex tells me it couldn't read arguements in F4SE.

Ugh,

all I did different from playing to going to play again was add more mods,

I created a test profile and with F4SE enabled and it said the same thing so Im thinking it's the script extender,

can someone tell me what to look for or some fix for this?

Thanks
