They are really only similar... a lot of stuff was dropped, some was added, and it is somewhat more of an 'action' game.

 

Regular sickness is gone, but there is now blood plague that can kill and cause your characters to turn, like black death was originally described as.

 

Hostile humans are all over the place.

 

Missions have more variety, but fatecards are almost gone, with all that is left being occasional resource loss.

 

The survivors are randomized, with many more traits, bonuses, and every one eventually can reach a 'hero' status where they get an additional bonus. There are also a wider variety of skills and specializations.

 

You'd probably get a better idea by watching some of the youtube videos about the changes.

It will be playable forever, as long as someone who has it is still interested in playing. Emulators and such allow games from the 1980s to still be playable.

 

As far as modding goes, there is a limit to how much data the game loads, so eventually it becomes a question of "Do I want feature A or B, because both won't work."

There have been 19 mods total released here since 2018. Only four this year, two of which are just texture replacements, one which just does the exact same thing an older mod does, and one ini tweak.

 

Pretty much inactive, for the most part.
