Fallout 4 Vortex/NMM mod conflicts (need help and advice)

Hello everyone, I need some help/advise on a few issues i'm having with Vortex and NMM. Ill start from the beginning and also sorry if this isn't the right place to post this, first time using the forums.

So i haven't done a lot modding with Vortex til the other day, all i really know how to do is get mods from the nexus mod sight and install and activate them. I used NMM for a long time but I stooped using it before Vortex came on the scene and I went on a big mod binge for Fallout 4.

Now for what ever reason i couldn't log into NMM like the actual mod organizer its self, so I thought id just get the ball rolling with Vortex and start modding through that. Now i did uninstall NMM BEFORE i uninstalled any mods on NMM. (It was only after i read about how you should uninstall any mods before you do) I down loaded around 60 mods for Fallout 4 and jumped in, then i realized things weren't right.

I opend the in game mod organizer but a few of the mods weren't activated and there were even duplicate mod listings. A few of my favorite mods wouldn't work such as Eli's Armor compendium, which was duplicated on the mod list in game, (or at least i haven't seen any of that mods gear yet) PipBoy Flash Fight, and a few other things i noticed such has a lot of invisible weapons witch i think are from the Weapon Smith mod.

I feel i should say that when i was perusing the NM web sight, i was seeing tags on the mods saying that i had already 'downloaded' this mod or that an 'update was ready', i knew i had some of these mods on NMM but i thought as i was going to uninstall it, it would be all good.

I should say i have resolved all the conflicts highlighted on Vortex and down loaded Mod organizer and Fallout 4 script extender, as well as any other mods required to run some of the more comprehensive mods.

What are the issues i'm facing, how do i fix them and what did i do wrong.

Anyway if anyone can help me solve these issues i would really appreciate it.

P,S i have a few side questions.

1. How to I optimize my load order to make my mods more compatible.

2. Does the free High Resolution Texture Pack on steam negatively affect the game when mods are running.

Thanks for the help.

You have a mish-mash of NMM and Vortex mods right now.

You should start over, PURGE and/or Uninstall everything you've installed with Vortex, then delete your game folder to get rid of all the stuff NMM left behind, and have steam verify your install and restore the Game\Data folder to it's original state, and start over with Vortex.

The mistake was uninstalling NMM without Uninstalling the mods that NMM installed first.
Vortex will know nothing about them, and they will stay installed without you being able to do anything about them

1. To optimize your load order to make things optimal, let Vortex do it's job, and only fix the things that Vortex complains about

it reads to me like you're suffering from mod manager overdose. You mention NMM, Vortex and the in-game mod manager.

First thing, choose one manager, and one manager only. If I'm being honest with you, never, under any circumstances use the in-game mod manager because it will destroy your load order for you every time you use it.

Mod managers do not play well together. They all want to do the same thing - manage your mods - and they don't communicate with each other - so vortex doesn't care about any mods you installed with NMM, and vice versa, and the in-game mod manager doesn't care about Vortex or NMM.

Using multiple mod managers always ends in the same result - a broken game.

So, before you start, choose a mod manager and stick with it.

Once you've done that, you need to clean up your game folders, so to do that you will need to delete your data folder - then validate your files via steam, which will recreate the data folder for you.

After that, you are free and clear to mod your game however you see fit.

In answer to your questions;

1. You can use LOOT which can order your plugins for you. Or, if you use Vortex, it has a built-in API to LOOT so it does it for you and dont believe anything you read on Reddit or elsewhere. Vortex works and works well.

2. Don't use that hi-res pack. It's awful. There are better mods on Nexusmods that do a better job than that pack with very little overhead on your game.

Hope this helps.

Ok great ill give those suggestions a shot!

I thought the in game mod organizer was just to help you customize your mods in game on the fly? didn't think it would interfere with Vortex. https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/21497 (Edit sorry bad link)

Just to be clear that is the in game configuration menu i am using.

Thanks a lot ill let you guys know how it goes.

your mod load order resides in plugins.txt and all mod managers will write to that file.

if you use more than one mod manager, then the last one you used will write what it thinks your load order should be to plugins.txt and it will only write what it knows about.

so, if you install a mod with nmm, nmm writes that data to plugins.txt.

if you then install a mod with vortex, he doesn't see or care that there's files put there by nmm in your data directory - so he writes his stuff to plugins.txt, and the nmm data is gone.

the in-game mod manager - the worst of the lot - will write to plugins.txt any time you invoke it - it never tells you this, it just does it - and wipes out whatever was there before.

so you can see all three of these mod managers try to do what they're meant to do - but the end result is absolute chaos.

having said all that - modding is really easy - honestly it is. all you are doing is literally copying files from directory x to directory y. all you need to do is select the tool that you like best to do that and stick with it. the more you use the same tool, the easier it becomes.

as this is the vortex support forum, my advice, as with HTR above, is to use vortex - it is - by absolute miles - the BEST mod manager out there. It's simple to use. just follow the guides, read the knowledge base and go and find gophergaming on you tube because he's doing some excellent tutorial videos on how to use vortex for a variety of games.

good luck.

when you delete your data folder - everything that was resident inside is removed and this will include script extender files.

but - installing that is a piece of cake to be honest. just make sure you don't delete the zip archive and you can re-install it from that as soon as steam has verified your game files and created a new, empty data folder.

to verify it's installed correctly - all you need to do is go into the data folder, and make a shortcut on your desktop to the f4se_loader.exe in your fallout4 directory. double click that, the game should start up right away, then go to settings on the game menu and you should see something like this in the lower right hand corner;

v (f4se 0.6.20 rel22) 1.10.163

which indicates that your fallout game was loaded successfully by F4SE.

You can do this before you start messing with mods and mod managers as F4SE can be installed manually in seconds (literally unpacking a zip file).

Ok great id probably rather get rid of every thing anyway, have a clean slate. Also before i started modding through Vortex i had Fallout 4 uninstalled on steam, which i then reinstalled. Should that have not deleted all the mods that i had on NMM?

And i simply deleted everything is side the fallout 4 folder so hopefully that should get rid of all the old NMM mods.

Cheers

if you removed/reinstalled then that will work. bit of overkill but nothing too bad.

Well as i said i installed Fallout 4 again before i started modding the game with vortex and it was the first time using Vortex too, and the conflict with Vortex and NMM was still there. If deleting the game files does not purge the files of the old NMM mods, is there anything else i can do?
