Removed SKSE due to crashes but Vortex continues to try using it

So I removed SKSE since only three mods I had required it, and it kept causing my game to not open.

However, it still continues to try and load it, and will say:

"Failed to run tool."

When I click for more info:

"Executable doesn't exist, please check the configuration for the tool you tried to start."

Details: Executable: D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\skse64_loader.exe

I removed it, but I can't get Vortex to stop trying to run it when I open Skyrim, so it fails.

From my logs:

Sun, 12 Jul 2020 23:08:42 GMT - warn: Failed to run tool wrap=false, text=Executable doesn't exist, please check the configuration for the tool you tried to start., message=Executable: D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\skse64_loader.exe

When I go to my settings it says:

Target: D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\SkyrimSE.exe

So I don't know why it keeps trying to run skse64_loader.exe

Any ideas on how I can get it to work again, and stop looking for SKSE? I already uninstalled/reinstalled both Skyrim and Vortex.

Turn off PRIMARY or REMOVE the tool from your dahsboard

Your SKSE entry in the dashboard has a little white banner on it.

Click the three vertical dots in the SKSE tool in the dashboard and select REMOVE

Also, please stop uninstalling and reinstalling your Game and Mod manager for easily fixable problems, Uninstalling and Reinstalling doesn't fix everything, and is an unnecessary step.

So I actually removed it, and removed it from the banner, which is why I said it no longer shows SKSE as the Target for opening. It's already been removed and yet still keeps trying to deploy.

So no, I'm not uninstalling and reinstalling for an "easily fixable problem". Maybe try and read the post next time.

Well, sorry for trying to save you time from uninstalling and reinstalling.

Was the START IN field empty when you edited the tool?

TARGET - D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\SkyrimSE.exe

START IN - ?

If so, that's what the problem was, all you needed to do was add D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\ to the START IN field.

Did you install SKSE with Vortex?

If so, did you uninstall SKSE with Vortex, or did you just manually delete it?

Because so far, when Vortex keeps looking for something that isn't there anymore, it's been because people have moved Vortex Folders or deleted files OUTSIDE of Vortex, instead of using Vortex to mobve or Delete them, so Vortex thinks the Folders or Files are still there.

  • 1 year later...

your fix didnt work, it literally does exactly what he says but removing even every tool wont fix the problem. I stopped playing because of this error and how impossible it is to fix or find a fix online.... good luck but removing the tool from the dashboard does nothing to fix the problem.

Our experience may or may not be relevant. SKSE is on our Vortex dashboard, and we do run Skryim SE from it. When we're playing offline, and we select "run," from the SKSE tool, we first get and see a small play window, against the Vortex larger flash-screen background. Next, we use the console to check "getskseversion," but we receive an invalid response, meaning that SKSE is not running.

So, we exit the small-windowed Skyrim-menu to desktop, and then select "run" again on the Vortex-dashboard-SKSE, and now we get and see a full-monitor-sized Skyrim SE play window. When we check with the console command, now we see SKSE is indeed running. Works fine in game. Hope this adds useful information. We can exit and restart the game from SKSE on Vortex after that, and SKSE will continue to run, until we log off our PC. When we log in anew, we have to do this same process above again.

Apologies if I am off base here, but it sounds like you are starting Vortex, and then using Vortex to start Skyrim. Is that correct?

If so, try leaving Vortex closed and just run Skyrim.

Normally speaking, playing Skyrim should be done without Vortex. Running Vortex all the time is adding unnecessary overhead to what can be an already stressed system. I run Skyrim through Vortex only when I already have Vortex open for management or troubleshooting, and the SSE or SKSE tools are merely there on the Dashboard as a convenience (not a necessity). All of my actual game play is done with Vortex closed.

I realize this doesn't fix the problem from the OP, but as a workaround it is better than not playing.

Also, this is really not the correct forum for this problem. It may be better served on the Vortex Support forum.

Relevant to correcting the problem described in the OP are the questions asked by HTR that never got answered:

  • Did you install SKSE with Vortex?
If so, did you uninstall SKSE with Vortex, or did you just manually delete it?
Because so far, when Vortex keeps looking for something that isn't there anymore, it's been because people have moved Vortex Folders or deleted files OUTSIDE of Vortex, instead of using Vortex to mobve or Delete them, so Vortex thinks the Folders or Files are still there.

Thanks, nt5raham,

We still need to run skyrim se with skse, which we have been doing (so far) with the SKSE tool on the Vortex dashboard. We installed SKSE as recommended, but added the tool to Vortex. We thought the OP might be doing something similar or different.

But we do seem to recall that we were able to set up a short-cut for Skyrim LE SKSE on the desktop, and run LE from there. . . . Our Skyrim SE, with 43 mods, runs very stable through the SKSE run-tool on the Vortex dashboard.

We will also post this comment on the Vortex forum, as you recommend.

Why do you need to run SKSE through Vortex? Has someone told you that you have to do it that way? SSE/SKSE work perfectly together without Vortex, and it saves computer resources. It is a win-win situation without Vortex in the background hogging resources (RAM, CPU time, etc.) that could be used to make your game run more smoothly.
